In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Ford discusses his final adventure as the titular hero. He explains what aspects of Indiana Jones’ life he wanted to explore and where he is at the start of the movie. Ford also teases how Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s character, Helena Shaw, changes him over the course of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Check out Ford’s full quote and interview below:

Harrison Ford: As much as we’ve come to know the character through his experiences and his relationships, this is the last Indiana Jones film for me. I wanted to deal with the end of his career. I wanted to deal with his age and less physical capacity available to him.

He’s also ending his academic career, which has not been the high point of his life. So, he’s a bit damped down in spirit until he’s challenged by the character that Phoebe plays. In the context of that relationship, he learns to love and laugh and live again.

Harrison Ford’s Making the Most of His Indiana Jones Swan Song

Ford’s approach to Indiana Jones has always been to make the audience both feel and understand the challenges that the hero faces, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is no exception. By focusing on the end of his career as an archeologist, a professor, and an adventurer, the movie can dig into how he fits into this new world and the impact of his life. The final chapter in Indiana Jones’ story, like many heroes, likely starts not as one of celebration but of self-reflection about the life he has led and the impact he has had on the world.

Dialing into the physical toll his exploits have had on his body and how his age impacts his abilities as an adventurer is a big part of delving into his final adventure. This is not the Indiana Jones who could take punch after punch and keep swinging. He is a man who must reckon with his own physical limitations. The world around Indiana Jones has changed as well, with the lines between good and evil blurring more than ever.

Waller-Bridge’s Helena Shaw being the one to pull him out of this funk in Indian Jones and the Dial of Destiny brings an interesting dynamic to their relationship, especially if that is not her goal but simply a byproduct of their interactions. Helena Shaw, Indiana Jones’ goddaughter, could challenge him, forcing him to tap back into the aspects of his life that have fallen away, like his love of history, puzzle solving, and fighting to protect the innocent. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is the hero’s final journey, and part of that journey might be stepping back into the role of adventurer and protector.
