George Lucas’ Reaction To Rogue One Revealed By Writer
Written by on June 3, 2023
George Lucas’ reaction to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has finally been revealed thanks to one of the writers. Although director Gareth Edwards had previously shared his enthusiasm over Lucas’ reaction to the film, no concrete answer was ever given until now. Lucas has largely avoided sharing his opinion on the Disney Star Wars movies, with his only comment on Star Wars: The Last Jedi describing it as “beautifully made.” However, Lucas has shared his general disappointment with some of Disney’s creative choices, such as their decision to discard his treatments for the sequel trilogy.
Speaking with Pete Hammond on the Deadline video series Behind the Lens, Tony Gilroy recalled his conversation with Lucas after Star Wars‘ creator had seen Rogue One.
“George Lucas called me after Rogue, I had a 45-minute conversation with him after he saw Rogue, and that’s the only time I’ve ever spoken to him. He loved it. He really did. He had a lot of things to say that I… It was like a call from the president.”
While Gilroy didn’t share any of Lucas’ specific comments, this does confirm how much Lucas enjoyed Rogue One. Gilroy describing it as “a call from the president” is a perfect analogy, as any Star Wars writer would cherish a stamp of approval from the maker himself.
Why Did George Lucas Love Rogue One?
Gilroy’s comments only reveal that Lucas loved Rogue One, but there are a few possible explanations for why he did. Rogue One was unlike any of the other Star Wars movies in terms of tone and style, and Lucas has always approved of creativity and inventiveness. Lucas’ biggest problem with Star Wars: The Force Awakens was that it felt like a retro movie and didn’t bring anything new to the table, whereas Lucas always tried to make each Star Wars movie feel unique. Rogue One certainly had its share of familiar Star Wars elements, but these were balanced by the film’s grittier tone and new ideas.
Lucas may also have seen Rogue One as honoring his own Star Wars movies. Disney’s approach to the sequel trilogy was very different from what Lucas had in mind, but Rogue One expands the timeline between Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Lucas always experimented with new filmmaking technology, and Rogue One recreating Tarkin’s face with CGI is something Lucas had also considered doing for Revenge of the Sith. Whatever Lucas’ reasons, Gilroy has confirmed that Star Wars‘ creator loved Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and hopefully future interviews will divulge Lucas’ detailed opinions.
