To mark the digital release of Fast X, Universal Pictures dropped the sequel’s 6-minute opening sequence, which featured a callback scene from 2011’s Fast Five involving Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto and Paul Walker’s Brian O’Connor stealing drug lord Hernan Reyes’ family vault. The incident resulted in the death of Hernan, signaling the start of Dante’s elaborate revenge against Dom and his family.

The tenth installment to the blockbuster franchise is currently one of the highest-grossing movies of 2023, with a current worldwide gross of over $660 million. However, it failed to surpass its last two predecessors, F9 and The Fate of the Furious. The film landed a digital release for June 9, just a few weeks after it premiered in theaters.

Fast X was directed by Louis Leterrier from a screenplay written by Justin Lin and Dan Mazeau. It features the return of the franchise’s core cast including Diesel as Dom Toretto, Michelle Rodriguez as Letty Ortiz, and Sung Kang as Han. In the film, the crew faces a dangerous threat from their past, who’s hellbent on making them pay for the death of his father.

The original cast is also joined by familiar faces in the form of Nathalie Emmanuel, John Cena, Helen Mirren, and Charlize Theron. In addition to Momoa, Fast X introduced new members to the long-running franchise such as Captain Marvel star Brie Larson, The Suicide Squad breakout Daniela Melchior, and Reacher’s Alan Ritchson. The latter recently shared an embarrassing moment between him and Diesel, revealing that he mindlessly told the Guardians of the Galaxy vet that he hadn’t seen most of the Fast & Furious movies.

Jason Momoa’s Explosive Fast & Furious Debut

Since Fast X made its debut, Momoa’s performance as the charismatic and villainous Dante Reyes garnered praise from critics, who described him as one of the best parts of the sequel. Rodriguez even described Momoa as the “best main villain” of the entire Fast & Furious franchise. However, recent rumors suggest that Diesel was reportedly not happy with the attention that Momoa has been getting for his performance.

In a previous interview, Leterrier opened up about Momoa’s creative process in creating Dante’s larger-than-life personality, revealing that Dante was created to be the opposite of Dom. “We wanted to create Dante’s yin to Dom’s yang,” the director said. “We wanted [them to be] complimentary — Dom has no hair, [and] Dante has nothing but hair. Dom wears nothing but black. Dante likes colors. Dom has the cross, [and] Dante has a weird devil belt on his chest. We had fun. It’s a question of trust. He needed to trust me and my taste because it’s almost like with a comedian.”

Fast X is now in theaters and is also available for digital purchase in SD, HD, and UHD on streaming platforms.
