Elliot Page Got Shingles From Stress While Filming Inception

Written by on June 12, 2023

In his memoir Pageboy, Elliot Page reflected on the toll of stress on mental and physical health in the entertainment industry while emphasizing the critical need for inclusivity and acceptance.

Page shared that he felt “out of place” on the set of Christopher Nolan’s Inception, writing in his memoir that “In a cast full of cis men, I did not understand the role I found myself in.” Thirteen years ago, Page starred in the film alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy and the scene-stealing Marion Cotillard. While he made sure to clarify that his fellow cast members were “delightful to work with,” the actor was struggling with the external pressures of stardom which seemed to be diametrically opposed to his quest for an authentic self.

Elliot Page’s Experience in Inception

Page was afraid that he would be “recast with Kiera Knightley,” and said the stress of being forced to play the role of a rising young starlet had an impact on his health. “Shingles popped out of my spine while filming Inception when I was twenty-two,” he wrote. Shingles, which can be caused by extreme stress, is a reactivation of the chickenpox virus and causes a painful rash on the body. For Page, who has described himself as transgender, non-binary and queer, much of that stress stemmed from not being comfortable with Hollywood’s projection of who they wanted him to be.

Page is known for starkly contrasting breakout performances in the vengeful thriller Hard Candy (2005) and the comedic youth drama Juno (2007). The Oscar-nominated actor also starred as Viktor Hargreeve in Netflix’s superhero show The Umbrella Academy, which eventually incorporated Page’s real life transition into the storyline.

Page came out to his followers on Instagram in 2020 in a heartfelt letter that concludes, “To all the trans people who deal with harassment, self-loathing, abuse, and the threat of violence every day: I see you, I love you, and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better.”

The memoir Pageboy chronicles Page’s personal journey of self-discovery and acceptance. Actor Jamie Lee Curtis provided a glowing blurb for the book, writing, “The emergence of our true selves is all of our life’s work. Pageboy helps chart the course.” Throughout the book, Page shares the challenges he faced while navigating societal expectations and stereotypes surrounding gender and sexuality.

Pageboy is out now and available from all major book retailers.
