Dungeons & Dragons Final Box Office Confirmed (& It’s Bad News For Honor Among Thieves 2)

Written by on May 27, 2023

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves‘ final box office numbers are in, and the results don’t bode well for a sequel getting the green light. Directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, the movie serves as an adaptation of the beloved tabletop role-playing game. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Hugh Grant, among others, and earned mostly positive reviews from critics.

Despite Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves‘ positive reviews, a new tweet from Exhibitor Relations Co. reveals that the film only made $93M domestically with a $207M worldwide total.

As the tweet, shared above, reveals, the film had a budget of $150M, which doesn’t include money spent on press and advertising. A general rule when it comes to major Hollywood productions is that marketing doubles the actual production budget of a film. Unfortunately, this means Honor Among Thieves 2 is now looking a lot less likely.

Is There Any Chance For Honor Among Thieves 2?

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves currently has an impressive 91% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, with the audience score actually exceeding that at 93%. This means that the film was generally very popular with those who saw it, but just not enough people actually did. While the reviews evidently weren’t enough to get audiences to theaters, they do suggest that the film could have legs elsewhere.

Honor Among Thieves was released on digital platforms May 2 with a physical release (4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD) scheduled for May 30. It’s possible that strong word-of-mouth could see Honor Among Thieves go some way to making up for its lackluster box office performance.

In fact, Honor Among Thieves was, in early May, the #1 film on VOD charts. Revenue numbers from VOD sales are rarely actually shared, though, so it’s not clear how much more the film has earned from people watching it at home. Even with a strong performance on VOD and potentially a similar result from the upcoming physical media release, however, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves‘ underwhelming box office performance is a strong indicator that a sequel won’t be getting the green light anytime soon.
