Mulans Mushu has been recreated in a hilarious new cosplay. The movie, which is based on a Chinese legend of a young woman who disguises herself as a man to go to war in her father’s place, originally premiered in 1998. One colorful addition to the original story was a sidekick for Mulan in the form of Mushu, a diminutive wisecracking dragon voiced by Eddie Murphy.

Recently, cosplayer Sabrina Mae put together a hilarious costume to transform into Mulan‘s Mushu.

The costume uses a red bodysuit to recreate the dragon’s iconic look, but the cherry on top is a neck extension that puts Mushu’s head way above normal human height. The costume is celebrated with a joyful video of Mae dancing on a table to the tune of Peyton Perrish’s cover of “I’ll Make a Man Out of You.”

Why Mushu Is Still so Iconic

It might seem natural that Mushu is still a fan-favorite character after all these years. Many Disney movies have longevity that outlives their original run, after all, however, he is just one of multiple sidekicks for Mulan seen in the 1998 hit, who include the lucky cricket Cri-Kee, her horse Khan, and her army buddies Yao, Ling, and Chien-Po.

While all of these characters are iconic in their own right, Mushu is typically the sidekick most associated with the legacy of Mulan. This is likely due almost entirely to the contributions of Eddie Murphy. The comedian, who first rose to prominence in the 1980s thanks to the likes of Beverly Hills Cop and Trading Places, contributed a pop culture savvy dynamism that most closely matched Robin Williams’ performance as Genie in 1992’s Aladdin.

Murphy’s infectious energy in Mulan is likely what got him the other iconic animated role of Donkey in 2001’s Shrek. The star would go on to play that role in countless other Shrek projects, though he only played Mushu one time, as the role was taken over by Mark Moseley in Mulan II, which makes his performance feel more special and rare exactly because it is less ubiquitous.
