Across the Spider-Verse’s Biggest Plot Holes & Unanswered Questions

Written by on June 17, 2023

In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Miles Morales finds himself in a quantum entanglement. He’s told his dad, Jefferson, must die in order for the multiverse to keep functioning. It’s a canon event, as Spider-Man 2099 calls it, from which tragedy and grief will develop. This agony’s meant to keep pushing Miles on as a hero, similar to the deaths of Uncle Ben and Captain Stacy in various realities.

As expected, Miles refutes this and rebels to save his dad. However, a civil war breaks out within the Spider Society, as a few other wall-crawlers have different takes than Miguel O’Hara. But as different motivations unfold, the film does have a few plot holes and unanswered mysteries pop up.

Why Do the Spiders Chase The Spot?

In the first half of the film, The Spot travels to Pavitr Prabhakar’s universe to cause chaos. However, it’s never explained why Gwen goes after Spot when he’s destined to fight Spider-Man India. She should be leaving Spot to his own devices, which would have increased the chances of a key death happening there to add pain to Pavitr’s life.

By pursuing, Gwen ruins that canon event, as Miles follows her and saves the victim. In addition, if Spot’s fate is to power up and come back to Miles’ Earth-1610 to kill Jefferson, Miguel’s team has even more reason to leave Spot be. This convolutes the plot, coming off as counterintuitive when all the Spiders should do is wait until after Miles’ canon event before taking Spot down.

Why Doesn’t Miguel Radio in Spider-Byte?

Spider-Byte, Margo Kess, in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse looking to the side.

In the finale, Miles baits Miguel and the other Spiders outside the citadel before heading back to the control room that sends folks back to their worlds. However, Miguel knows Miles doesn’t have a teleporter, and Spider-Byte’s hub is the only way he can get out. Sadly, Miguel doesn’t radio her in to warn Miles is coming or radio other Spiders to go and protect the room. It makes no sense as it’s Miles’ only way off-world, which means they could have set their own trap.

Why Doesn’t Jessica Drew Stop Spider-Byte?

Spider-Man, Jessica Drew, slings web and rides her motorcycle in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

In the citadel, Miles turns invisible, slips into a pod and has the AI send him home. However, Spider-Byte has the option of shutting the pod down, but she feels sorry and lets Miles teleport out. The problem with this human choice is the movie’s Jessica Drew is right next to her and in full view of the panel. Thus, when the large font comes up about rebooting on the screen, Jessica is literally there watching Spider-Byte opt not to. It doesn’t add up because Jessica remains loyal to Miguel and should have forced Spider-Byte to abort or have done it herself.

Why Didn’t Team Miguel Intervene in the MCU?

Split Image: The Spot, Miles Morales, and Miguel O'Hara in Across the Spider-Verse

Now, the MCU is mentioned a couple of times in Across the Spider-Verse, with Miguel talking about Doctor Strange’s spell and how Tom Holland’s Peter Parker caused incursions. However, it’s never explained why didn’t Miguel’s crew intervene or how all this affected their web of destiny. After all, the incursions did seem to create new chaos and canon events Miguel didn’t cater for. So, the film should have at least referenced why the Spider Society stayed out of the melee in No Way Home, despite Spiders such as Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions getting sucked in.

What Happens to Miles and Gwen’s Webbing?

Spider-Gwen swings through New York in Across the Spider-Verse

When a grounded Miles and Gwen are in his room, they shoot their webbing as she tries to grab his journal. It’s a cute, funny and romantic moment, with Gwen seeing he misses her through his plethora of sketches. However, when Miles’ parents come in to see if he’s there, while they spot Gwen’s hoodie, they don’t notice webbing on the bed. It’s plot convenience at its finest, considering they enter the room right after.

Why Does Miles Unmask in Public So Much?

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse' Rio and Miles having a heartfelt chat

In quite a few scenes, when Miles is racing home, he walks under bridges, swings on buildings and sticks to walls unmasked. And when he’s racing back to class after his first fight with The Spot, he comes off as someone lacking caution. In this world, there are many cameras around, and Brooklyn is a city with folks using cell phones everywhere. So, Miles shouldn’t be exposing himself like that.

How Does Earth-42’s Rio Mistake Miles?

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has Rio and Jefferson with Miles in a school meeting

Sadly, Miles doesn’t get sent home by Spider-Byte, as his code and spider-bite are different due to the creature being from Earth-42. But when he gets to that reality, Rio (his mom) doesn’t observe physical changes with him. Miles has a different hairstyle, which Aaron-42 does notice. But while Aaron-42 can tell something’s off, Rio doesn’t realize this Miles isn’t as tall as hers. In addition, Miles-42, when he’s revealed as the evil Prowler, has scars, so Rio should have figured out Miles-1610 was not her boy.

Why Doesn’t Spot Portal Team Miles Away?

Miles Morales/Spider-Man running from The Spot in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

When Miles and Gwen try to stop Spot from absorbing quantum energy in India, Miles tries to punch through a shield. However, it’s never explained why Spot doesn’t use portals to drop them away from the location. He did it to the other scientists and did it to Miles in their earlier scrap. Yet, he forgets about using the tool here, even though he sees them trying to get through.

How Does Spider-Sense Work?

A split image of Spider-Gwen, Miles Morales, and Spider-Man 2099 in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

This Spider-Sense is something the movie is very fluid with. Miles’ Spider-Sense initially works on the roof when he tries to avoid his parents for reaching late to Jefferson’s party. However, it cuts off, and they catch him. Not to mention, it’s absent when Rio sneaks up on him and Gwen — all things that the movie never addresses.

In addition, this warning ability doesn’t sense all of Spot’s attacks, which could easily have been explained away had the film deemed them an anomaly in space and time. This would have made them unpredictable and played into Miles not sensing the betrayals at the citadel, not realizing Aaron-42 is evil and figuring out the world in Across the Spider-Verse‘s ending isn’t really his. As for Gwen, she realizes Miles is indeed in the wrong world, but it’s never revealed how other than the fact he’s not at home. Ultimately, it feels shoehorned in for drama’s sake, so Gwen can start rustling up allies to rescue Miles.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now playing in theaters.
