Eddie Murphy and Jonah Hill’s Netflix movie gets first reviews

Comedy legend Eddie Murphy and Jonah Hill’s new Netflix R-rated comedy film You People‘s first reviews are in – and it is not looking good.

The film currently has a 33% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with most critics thrashing the film in their reviews.

For example, The Wrap‘s film critic Ronda Racha Penrice said: “While their take on interracial relationships in the 21st century seems aimed at young-adult viewers, it will likely instead land with their parents and grandparents.”

Meanwhile Stephanie Zacharek of TIME Magazine pointed out that while the film stretches hard to make a point, it is ultimately playing too safe to make them.

Variety‘s Rene Rodriguez said: “You People fizzles out and loses its nerve when it matters the most, not allowing its comedy to speak for itself, as if it were afraid people in the back row — or the recliner sofa — might miss the point.”

Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times said that the film “sinks under the weight of its obviousness and a consistently heavy-handed approach, despite the sometimes stylish and well-paced direction from Kenya Barris and an incredibly talented cast”.

However, not all reviews were negative as IndieWire‘s Christian Zilko points out that you can only not like this film if you don’t like fun: “You People ends up being more of a feel-good rom-com and love letter to Los Angeles than a truly biting satire, but you’d have to hate fun to complain about that.”

While the Hollywood Reporter‘s Sheri Linden said: “It comes on like gangbusters and keeps generating belly laughs well past the halfway point, slowing down then to take a GPS-directed turn into familiar romance.”

With overwhelmingly negative reviews, it doesn’t look like You People is being received well by the critics. However, the audience is notorious for loving films that the critics don’t necessarily like, so maybe it still has a saving grace.
