The Origins of TMD/TMJ Syndrome
TMD/TMJ Syndrome is a compilation of apparently unrelated symptoms caused by reflexive steps of the muscles of biting as well as chewing. It comes from brain muscle conditioning acquired by trauma or stress. Like with all training troubles, it may be altered with appropriate education, often with no demand for other interventions — but this sort of education is outside of the scope of dentistry (though within the scope of clinical somatic education).
The jaw muscles, like all the the muscles of the entire body, are subject to command by conditioned postural reflexes, that affect chewing and biting movements. The primary reason people don’t go around slack jawed as well as drooling, for example, is that a conditioned postural reflex will cause the muscles of biting and read more chewing generally to stay slightly tensed, keeping their jaws shut.
People’s jaw muscles are usually pretty much tense, no matter if they’re asleep — but the norm is quite mildly tense — just adequate to help keep the mouth closed and lips together.
The degree of tension men and women hold is a matter of conditioning.
