Column: VR is doomed to fail with these prices
Companies have been trying to make Virtual Reality the next big hype in gaming for some time, but so far not very successfully. According to Ralph, VR is also doomed to fail at current prices.
The idea of Virtual Reality is very appealing. We now regularly see beautiful worlds in games, but how cool would it be to actually walk around in it, instead of seeing it on a flat screen? Such experiences are unfortunately very rare in VR games so far.

The lack of supply can also be explained very simply: the sales market is simply very small. There will probably be plenty of developers who can whip up a great VR experience if they put in the time and effort. It’s just not worth putting so many resources into it when only a very small portion of gamers can play that title.
High investment, few games
But why do so few players have VR glasses at home? That question is also quite easy to explain for many players. In many cases, the price tag is the major factor not to purchase. Especially if there are hardly any games that are worth playing on your brand new VR glasses.
The copies that have the technology to run all Virtual Reality games are not exactly cheap. For example, for the full kit of the HTC Vive Pro 2 you have lost a small 1349 euros. After all, you should not only have the VR glasses, but also the necessary controllers, sensors and more.
And we haven’t even mentioned the fact that you have to have a thick gaming PC under your desk. That’s a huge investment for the very small number of must-have experiences you get in return.
PSVR2 the rescue?
Of course, price is a hot topic when it comes to gaming on a PC. Normally the outcome is buying a console. For a few hundred euros you then have a device that is specifically made for games and you do not have to worry about whether the hardware can run the titles. VR on consoles therefore seems to be the ultimate outcome to make it mainstream and ensure a broad user base.
That hope now seems to have been crushed by Sony. The Japanese company has been busy for a long time to bring out more and more information about the PlayStation VR2 and to hype the public. The highlight finally came this week with the announcement of the release date of the Virtual Reality glasses. And another little thing: the price.
The latter is for many players only the reason why the hype is immediately dead. Sony puts a price tag of 600 euros on the PSVR2. Exactly, the VR glasses are more expensive than the PlayStation 5 itself, which you need to use the glasses at all. It may not be as expensive as an HTC or Valve device, but it’s expensive enough to make many players skip the PSVR2. At this rate, the cycle is never broken and VR is doomed to fail.
