NEW DELHI: After the controversy around ‘Bulli Bai’ app and Muslim women which led to action by the central government, cyber security agency CERT, and the police in Mumbai and Delhi, steps have now been initiated against a Telegram channel as well as some Facebook pages for sharing photos of Hindu women and abusing them.
IT and telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed a user on Twitter that government had taken a note of the Telegram channel and had got the same blocked. “Channel blocked. Government of India coordinating with police authorities of states for action,” he responded as rumblings began on social media over alleged targeting of Hindu women.
Vaishnaw’s assurance came after a Twitter user mentioned the channel on Telegram that he alleged was “targeting Hindu women, sharing photos & abusing them”.
Minutes after Vaishnaw’s assurance, junior minister for IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar also said that he has directed the IT ministry (Meity) to direct Meta to take down objectionable pages against Hindu girls. A spokesperson for Meta did not comment on the matter.
The controversy over targeting of girls from various communities has been growing over the past few days and had erupted just at the beginning of the year after photographs of at least 100 influential Muslim women were uploaded for auction on the ‘Bulli Bai’ app, which had led to action by IT and telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and thereafter by Mumbai police.
Meanwhile, an MLAT (Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty) has been issued by a chief metropolitan magistrate in the ‘Sulli Deals’ case after approvals were given and it is being shared with CBI, the nodal agency.
“The ‘Bulli Bai’ case has been transferred to us. The MLAT procedure in the ‘Sulli’ app case is completed in India and will soon be delivered to the Department of Justice. Details will be sought through MLAT and will be shared through Interpol,” said KPS Malhotra, DCP of Intelligence Fusion and strategic operations (IFSO) unit.
Delhi Police is planning to rely on official information obtained from Github about the user who created Sulli Deals or Bulli Bai apps. It has filed an FIR based on a woman journalist’s complaint in the matter.
