British justice formally authorizes the extradition of Julian Assange
A London court has issued an extradition order against the WikiLeaks founder. The Australian, prosecuted by American justice for the dissemination of classified documents, can still appeal to the High Court.

Hopes are dwindling for the founder of WikiLeaks. British justice formally authorized the extradition of Julian Assange, Wednesday April 20. A London court has officially issued an extradition order for the 50-year-old Australian. He is being prosecuted by the United States for the dissemination, from 2010, of more than 700,000 classified documents on American military and diplomatic activities, particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan. He faces 175 years in prison, which his supporters denounce as a serious attack on the freedom of the press.

Britain’s Home Secretary has yet to approve the order and defense lawyers can still appeal to the High Court. Outside the court, a few dozen supporters of Julian Assange had gathered on Wednesday, including the former leader of the British Labor Party Jeremy Corbyn. “He did absolutely nothing more than tell the truth to the world,” he said.

In January 2021, British justice first refused the extradition of Julian Assange, citing a risk of suicide. The High Court overturned that decision in December, finding that the United States had provided assurances that addressed the judge’s concerns, and another defense appeal was overturned in March.

In Toulouse, ten years after the attacks of Mohammed Merah, commemoration ceremonies took place on Sunday March 20. Emmanuel Macron and his Israeli counterpart Isaac Herzog paid tribute to the seven victims aged 3 to 30.

Imad Ibn Ziaten, soldier in Toulouse; Abel Chennouf and Mohamed Legouad, parachutists in Montauban; Jonathan Sandler, a teacher at a Jewish school where his children Gabriel, 3, and Arieh, 5, were educated; Myriam Monsonego, 8, the daughter of the school principal. These seven faces are those of seven lives, mowed down in March 2012, by the Islamist terrorist Mohammad Merah.

A ceremony open to the public
Sunday March 20, in Toulouse (Haute-Garonne), a ceremony paid tribute to the victims and allowed relatives to gather. The authorities wanted a ceremony open to the public. More than 2,000 people were able to attend. Relatives and witnesses spoke. Many of them were only children at the time, the victims were their classmates.
