Activision: “There will be a full-fledged Call of Duty in 2023”

There are certain things that you are more or less sure about every year, like a brand new Call of Duty game in the fall. But that will be questioned for next year. Still, Activision now promises that there will be a full-fledged Call of Duty in 2023.

It has been rumored for a while that Activision Blizzard will not release a new Call of Duty in 2023 for the first time in a sloppy 20 years. But in the company’s latest quarterly review, it appears to refute those claims. Activision claims that in addition to robust live support for Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0, 2023 will also get “the next full-fledged premium release” in the series.

That seems to undermine rumors that there won’t be a new game next year. “Full-fledged premium release” is a formula usually reserved for completely new titles. Yet the oft-reliable journalist Jason Schreier still doubts that there will be a new Call of Duty next year.

Schreier claims that the studio Sledgehammer will bring a major paid expansion for Modern Warfare 2 next year, something that is also already rumored. This DLC is paid and bring a lot of content. Schreier suspects that is the reason that Activision dares to speak of a fully-fledged premium release. The next new game wouldn’t come until 2024.

When will Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2’s successor be revealed

It remains to be seen what will actually happen next year. New Call of Duty games are often revealed in the summer (although Modern Warfare 2 was there earlier). So we probably won’t know for sure in the coming months whether 2023’s Call of Duty is a new game or a massive expansion.
