Across the Spider-Verse Photo Showcases THAT Prowler Cameo

Written by on June 5, 2023

Costume designer Trayce Gigi Field releases a better look at the live-action Prowler suit made for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

When Spider-Man Miles Morales visits the Spider-Society’s headquarters in the film, he witnesses a number of villains displaced from their home universe. This includes a live-action version of Miles’ uncle, Aaron Davis AKA the Prowler, played by actor Donald Glover. On Instagram, Field shared a photo of the scene and another taken with Glover in his Prowler costume, which Field created with Vanessa Mi Kyung Lee. The latter posted that making the suit “was a super rush and a fun and exciting project.”

Donald Glover’s History With Spider-Man, Explained

Glover has his own history with the Spider-Man mythos, and is partially credited for the creation of Miles Morales. In 2011, he threw his support behind a fan campaign pushing for him to star as Spider-Man Peter Parker in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, but the leading role went to Andrew Garfield instead. However, the comedy series Glover starred in, Community, referenced the fan campaign by placing his character Troy Barnes into a set of Spider-Man pajamas for a scene. Following the campaign, writer Brian Michael Bendis introduced Miles Morales in Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, and told CBR then of the aforementioned Community scene, “It made me feel like we were on the right track.”

The prior Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) features a nod to Glover by having the Community scene playing in the background of Aaron Davis’ apartment. Although Glover does not voice Miles or his uncle in the Spider-Verse films, he has played both characters in other projects. Glover voiced Miles Morales in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series aired on Disney XD, and portrayed a live-action Aaron Davis in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). It is unknown as of writing whether Glover’s Prowler in Across the Spider-Verse is the same Aaron Davis from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Donald Glover Adds Another Spider-Man Villain to His Resume

Outside Across the Spider-Verse and the MCU, Glover is set to play another Spider-Man character in a solo film set within Sony’s Spider-Man universe: Hypno-Hustler. The news broke in Dec. 2022 that Glover will both star in and produce the project. Hypno-Hustler is a Spider-Man villain co-created by writer Bill Mantlo and artist Frank Springer in 1978’s Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #24, and is able to hypnotize people through his music. It seems the door is open then for Hypno-Hustler to appear in the upcoming sequel Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, being that Sony’s Spider-Man universe appears in Across the Spider-Verse thanks to a cameo from the Venom films’ Mrs. Chen (Peggy Lu).

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now playing in theaters.
