Accused by Lula of having “encouraged” such acts through

Brazil: can we compare the attack of January 8 in Brasilia to that of the American Capitol?
Protesters attacked buildings of power in the Brazilian capital, an assault reminiscent of that of supporters of Donald Trump two years ago.
“Terrorists”, “fascists”, “putschists”: the Brazilian government did not have enough harsh words to describe the rioters responsible for the attack on three places of power in Brasilia (Brazil). An opposition demonstration which degenerates, vandalized symbols, at the end of a presidential election whose result is disputed by some of the voters… The events which shook Brazil, Sunday January 8, are curiously reminiscent of the attack on US Capitol by pro-Trump activists, January 6, 2021. Political climate, nature of the attack, reactions, consequences… Franceinfo puts these two attacks in their context.
A similar post-election context
In Brazil in recent weeks, as in the United States two years ago, some of the outgoing president’s supporters do not recognize the result of the election which saw their candidate lose. In Washington, on January 6, 2021, demonstrators waved flags glorifying Republican Donald Trump, who then repeated (and he continues to do so) that the ballot had been manipulated by the Democratic camp.
Like the former American president, Jair Bolsonaro multiplied the declarations of distrust with regard to the ballot which saw Lula return to power, and also did not wish to be present at the investiture ceremony of his successor. Another common point between these Brazilian and American electorates: they are classified very on the right and defend conservative programs, even of the extreme right.
Different political objectives
In Brasilia, demonstrators turned rioters attacked symbols of Brazilian democracy. In Washington, pro-Trump activists stormed Congress, the center of American legislative life. In Brazil, the Bolsonarists ransacked three buildings representing the three powers: the National Congress, the presidential palace of Planalto (where the office of President Lula is located) as well as the Federal Supreme Court, the highest court in the country.
The objective of the pro-Trump protesters was relatively clear: to prevent the confirmation of Joe Biden’s victory by disrupting the official vote count by the American Electoral College. But in the case of the attack in Brasília, supporters of far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro seemed to have a different goal, namely to issue an “SOS” to the army to overthrow the elected government – and perhaps allow – be Bolsonaro’s return to power. This is what the bolsonarists have tagged on the walls and the dome of the Senate, as reported by the Brazilian journalist Marina Dias on Twitter (in Portuguese).
A heavier toll in Washington
On the day of the attack on the Capitol in Washington, members of Congress, staff of the institution, as well as then Vice President Mike Pence were present and had to be taken to safety. A 43-year-old police officer, Brian Sicknick, had also lost his life trying to repel pro-Trump activists. Two other police officers who had intervened in Washington had also committed suicide in the following days, recalls the New York Times (in English).
In Brasília, the three buildings attacked were almost completely empty. A normal situation for a Sunday, especially since the members of the Legislative Assembly and the Supreme Court are on vacation for the entire month of January. President Lula was on his way to the small town of Araraquara, in southern Brazil, hard hit by floods in recent weeks.
Two years ago, four Donald Trump supporters were killed, including a protester shot dead by a Capitol police officer, and around 50 people were arrested the same day. Apart from dozens of injured, the toll is not as heavy in the case of the attack in Brasilia, where no related death has so far been reported. Nearly 1,200 protesters were arrested, according to the New York Times.
Very distinct reactions from Jair Bolsonaro and Donald Trump
Differences are to be noted in the way these two outgoing presidents commented on the events while they were still taking place. On January 6, 2021, Donald Trump appeared to support his supporters by posting vehement messages on Twitter, before calling on his supporters to non-violence and then to finally “go home”.
In the case of the attack in Brasilia, Jair Bolsonaro did not immediately comment on the riots. It was only after the return to calm in the Brazilian capital that the ex-president, on vacation in the United States since December 30, condemned this attack. “Depredations and invasions of public buildings are against the rule,” he wrote on Twitter. Accused by Lula of having “encouraged” such acts through his recent speeches, he rejected “the accusations without proof” of his successor.

In the United States, the noose has been tightening for several months around Donald Trump concerning the attack on the Capitol. The parliamentary commission of inquiry recommends criminal proceedings against the former president, in particular for calling for insurrection and conspiracy against the State. In Brazil, President Lula promised to identify “the putschists who promoted the destruction of public property”. A new ordeal for the Brazilian president, who had chosen to deliver a speech of union during his inauguration on January 1.
