Nintendo 3DS & Wii U eShops Will Stop Accepting Credit Cards Soon

The Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShops will stop accepting credit card purchases soon as the services come closer and closer to being shut down.
The Nintendo 3DS and Wii U will no longer allow users to purchase eShop content with credit cards, and that change is happening very soon. The two systems are now 11 and 9 years old respectively, and Nintendo is in the process of phasing out support for both of them.
In February of this year, Nintendo announced its intention to discontinue all digital purchasing options for the 3DS and Wii U eShops by the end of March 2023. Different forms of payment will be disabled on specific dates throughout this next year as part of the sunsetting process. These include credit and debit cards, physical Nintendo eShop Cards, and ultimately Nintendo Network ID wallets. Unfortunately, the first step in this sunsetting process is right around the corner.
Nintendo Everything has given a reminder that credit and debit cards will no longer be usable on the 3DS and Wii U eShops as of May 23. This leaves those who want to purchase any games or other content from either storefront with just over a week to add funds via credit. Any money added to an account can still be spent on both eShops after May 23, but credit and debit cards cannot be charged to add more.
The next step in the sunsetting of the 3DS and Wii U eShops will be the discontinuation of Nintendo eShop Cards, which will take place on August 29. All unused prepaid cards will be disabled after that date, but download codes for games and content will still work. Those who have linked their Nintendo Network ID wallet with their Nintendo Account wallet will be able to spend that shared balance on the 3DS and Wii U eShops until March 2023. Nintendo has stated that it will still be possible to play online, redownload games and DLC, and get software updates for Wii U and 3DS after March 2023 and into the foreseeable future.
Although service shutdowns are inevitable for all online systems and Nintendo did give advance notice to fans, this situation still brings up the issue of game preservation. For anyone who doesn’t own the physical versions of their favorite Wii U and 3DS titles, they’re about to lose access to multiple generations of Nintendo games. Many Wii U exclusives have been rereleased on Switch, but the 3DS had a much larger library of exclusive titles than many people know. In any case, 3DS and Wii U owners would be wise to buy any remaining digital games they want as soon as possible.
