Chris Hemsworth Delves Into His Villainous Transformation in Furiosa
Written by on June 17, 2023
Chris Hemsworth, known for his roles as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and in the Extraction film franchise, is set to take on a new challenge in the upcoming film Furiosa. Serving as a prequel to the highly acclaimed Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa will see Hemsworth portraying a villainous character, diverging from his usual heroic roles. The film’s storyline revolves around a young Furiosa, who finds herself snatched away from her home, the Green Place of Many Mothers, and thrust into the clutches of a Biker Horde led by the ruthless Warlord Dementus. As Furiosa navigates the treacherous Wasteland, she crosses paths with Immortan Joe, the tyrannical ruler of the Citadel, and becomes entangled in the power struggle between the two leaders.
In a recent interview with EW, Hemsworth shared his experience preparing for the role in Furiosa. Initially uncertain about portraying a villain, Hemsworth admitted feeling a sense of apprehension as the project drew nearer. However, as he immersed himself in the character’s mindset, a breakthrough occurred, leading to one of the most fulfilling experiences of his career. Hemsworth also expressed admiration for director George Miller’s creative vision, emphasizing that Furiosa captures the essence of the Mad Max universe with its grandeur and otherworldly elements.
“It’s massive and otherworldly and everything you’d expect from the Mad Max world,” Hemsworth said. “[Miller] has managed to do something unexpected, which has blown me away.”
“I wasn’t sure what I was going to do,” Hemsworth continued. “It was starting to get scary the closer I got to shooting. Then, all of a sudden, it clicked, and it was one of the best experiences I’ve had.”
Furiosa Takes Audiences on a 15-Year Journey
Furiosa is directed by George Miller, known for his previous work on Mad Max: Fury Road. Co-written by Nico Lathouris, the screenplay promises to offer a fresh and distinct experience for viewers. While it maintains connections to its predecessor, Miller previously emphasized that Furiosa will bring forth a host of differences. One notable departure is the extended timespan of the story, spanning 15 years. This extended narrative arc sets it apart from Fury Road, which transpired over a compact timeframe of three days and two nights.
“All I can say about my excitement about doing it is that it’s definitely exciting, because even though it’s certainly of that world of Fury Road, it’s also got a lot of the differences we’ve been talking about,” Miller revealed. “Again, it’s uniquely familiar. And probably the biggest difference is the timespan. Fury Road happened over three days and two nights and this one happens over 15 years. So, it’s a saga.”
Anya Taylor-Joy, recognized for her performances in The Northman and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, takes on the role of a younger Imperator Furiosa, portrayed by Charlize Theron in Fury Road. Alongside her, an ensemble of actors including Tom Burke, Nathan Jones, Angus Sampson, Quaden Bayles, Daniel Webber, and Lachy Hulme. Furiosa hits theaters on May 24, 2024.
