Extraction 2 Reviews Mostly Praise the Action Sequel, Debuts at 78% On Rotten Tomatoes

The reviews for the Netflix action sequel Extraction 2 are now in, with the Chris Hemsworth-led movie debuting at a respectable 78% on Rotten Tomatoes. Due for release tomorrow, Extraction 2 finds Hemsworth’s mercenary Tyler Rake assigned to rescue a ruthless Georgian gangster’s family from the prison where they are being held. So, is Extraction 2 a mission accomplished?

We begin with MovieWeb’s own Olly Dyche, who feels strongly that Netflix have now carved out their own action movie franchise with Extraction 2.

“2023 has knocked it out of the park with its action movies thus far, and Extraction 2 is without a doubt in the running for the best the year had to offer. This is, of course, mostly attributed to Hargrave’s flawless eye for action. The movie delivers a much larger spectacle than the first and a far bigger kill count. Extraction 2 is the sequel fans of the universe have been dying to see.”

The praise continues courtesy of Comicbook.com’s Charlie Ridgely, who similarly feel that Extraction 2 is the action movie that both audiences and Netflix has been waiting for.

“This is the gnarly pulse-pounder that Netflix advertised back in 2020. This is the bombastic action extravaganza we’ve been waiting for.”

Empire’s Helen O’Hara awards Extraction 2 a near-perfect 4/5, and cannot wait to join Tyler Rake on a third Extraction mission.

“It’s an assault on the senses, especially the ears and the nerves, but it’s also a satisfyingly merciless action thriller that manages to build on the scale and ambition of the first. Roll on the inevitable threequel.”

IGN’s Matt Donato applauds the no-nonsense approach to the action taken by director Sam Hargrave, and the way that it bombards audiences with action beat after action beat.

“Extraction 2 is an action-packed sequel that doesn’t rewrite the rules of the genre and has no more than the bare minimum of story, but it doesn’t have to when the hits start coming and they don’t stop coming.”

But not everyone is as enamored with the return of Tyler Rake. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw eviscerates Extraction 2, giving it a bleak rating of 1/5 and finding the sequel to be a cynical cash-grab.

“The first Extraction was entertaining enough but this new one is just cynically about extracting the cash.”

The disapproval continues courtesy of Slashfilm’s Josh Spiegel, who describes Extraction 2 as “an exhausting and dour return to the world of Tyler Rake.”

“The fairest thing that can be said of “Extraction 2” is that it is very much of a piece with its predecessor.”

Collider’s Robert Brian Taylor heaps praise on the main action sequence in Extraction 2, but could not help but find that the sequel erases what made Tyler Rake such a captivating hero.

“But, in every other way, Extraction 2 feels like a glossier and more by-the-numbers extension of the first movie. By giving Rake, their Sad Action Hero, something more to fight for, the filmmakers accidentally stripped the character of what made him so compelling in the first place.”

We end with a positive, as Variety’s Courtney Howard greatly appreciated the “vigor” that stems from the “unfussy” nature of Extraction 2, which removes “much of the excessive weight that bogged down the original.”

“As its compelling lead character cuts through his personal strife whilst helping another family find the sense of freedom he too seeks, a new trail is blazed that recenters the series on bone-crunching brutality and bravado.”

Extraction 2 will be released by Netflix on June 16, 2023.
