Across the Spider-Verse Director Is ‘Sworn to Silence’ on the Next Sequel
Written by on June 12, 2023
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse co-director Kemp Powers is “sworn to silence” regarding the plot of the film’s sequel, Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Via The Hollywood Reporter, when asked about Beyond the Spider-Verse, Powers replied, “I can’t really comment at all on the third one. I’m sorry to just give you a big ol’ non-answer. But really, it’s only because people are so desperate for information, and everything kind of ends up getting misread or misquoted. I’ve been sworn to silence. As soon as you say Beyond the Spider-Verse, my mouth closes.”
Questions Raised by Across the Spider-Verse
Powers may have already been outflanked by his fellow director, Joaquim Dos Santos, who commented on Spider-Ham’s cameo alongside Gwen at the end of Across the Spider-Verse. “That was some stuff that was cut pretty early on, just for time,” Dos Santos said regarding Spider-Ham’s brief appearance. “We knew part of the joy of Gwen getting the band back together was the promise that you’ll see them more in the next one.” Other notable characters largely left out were Spider-Man Noir, voiced by Nicolas Cage, as well as Peni Parker, voiced by Kimiko Glenn, whose appearance at the end confirms a feud between her and Miguel O’Hara heading into Beyond the Spider-Verse.
The lack of concrete answers as to the plot of Beyond the Spider-Verse has led to a range of speculation on its growing cast list. There were over 280 variants of Spider-People in Across the Spider-Verse, well over Christopher Miller’s initial estimate of 240. With surprise cameos from celebrities such as Donald Glover, there is the possibility of even more celebrities in the sequel. Oscar Isaac, who plays Miguel, called for his longtime friend and fellow actor Pedro Pascal to join. “They’re so brilliant at finding the right person for the right character, but maybe Pedro Pascal,” Isaac said. “Let’s find something for him. He should be a Spider-Person, like a cranky, old Spider-Person.” Daniel Kaluuya (Spider-Punk) hoped that Snoop Dogg and actor Bill Murray could also feature.
At a minimum, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will see reprisals from its ensemble cast of Shameik Moore (Miles Morales), Hailey Steinfeld (Gwen Stacy), Oscar Isaac (Miguel O’Hara), Brian Tyree Henry (Jeff Morales), Jake Johnson (Peter Parker), Issa Rae (Spider-Woman) Daniel Kaluuya (Spider-Punk) and Karan Soni (Spider-Man), among others. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will be co-written by Christopher Miller and Philip Lord, and directed by Dos Santos, Powers and Justin K. Thompson.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is currently in theaters. The sequel, Beyond the Spider-Verse, is set to release on March 29, 2024.
