Documentary Highlights Decades Of Stephen King Adaptations

A trailer for a new Stephen King documentary titled King on Screen highlights decades of Stephen King adaptations for screens big and small. King is a horror icon, best known for writing books like Carrie, The Shining, IT, Cujo, and Pet Sematary, among many others. Many his books have been adapted into films and TV series throughout the years, bringing plenty of memorable adaptations to King’s Constant Readers.

Dark Star Pictures Trailers has released a trailer for King on Screen, a documentary about the many decades of adaptations King’s writing has received.

The film features a variety of creators that have been involved in adapting King’s work, including Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep, Gerald’s Game), Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile), and Mick Garris (The Stand, The Shining). The documentary appears to celebrate King’s legacy and the many adaptations of his stories.

How Stephen King Became A Horror Figurehead

King’s first published novel, Carrie, was released in 1974, with a film adaptation starring Sissy Spacek coming to theaters in 1976 directed by Brian De Palma. Since then, King has written many horror stories that have been adapted into films and TV shows. The latest King adaptation is The Boogeyman, a film starring Yellowjackets‘ Sophie Thatcher based on King’s 1973 short story of the same name.

Many of King’s stories focus on supernatural horror and childhood fears, such as IT, which sees Pennywise the Clown torturing children with their greatest fears. King’s books are also unique in that they are connected in a shared multiverse by his Western fantasy series The Dark Tower. Flanagan, who previously directed adaptations of King’s Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game is currently developing a TV show adaptation of The Dark Tower, which King has boasted support for.

Because King’s works are still being adapted almost 50 years after the release of Carrie, the horror icon is likely to continue having his work translated to the screen for many years to come. King appears driven to write more material too as the 75-year-old author’s latest novel Holly, is set to debut later this year. With so much history within King adaptations, King On Screen will have plenty to celebrate in the horror author’s prolific career.
