Fast X Appears to Land a Digital Release Less Than a Month After Hitting Theaters
Written by on June 3, 2023
Universal’s Fast X seemingly received a digital release date, after just a few weeks in theaters.
According to Microsoft, Fast X can now be pre-ordered in SD, HD, and UHD and will be available to purchase for $24.99 on June 9. The tenth installment in the Fast and Furious franchise was released in theaters on May 19. This digital release date has not been officially confirmed by Universal.
Fast X has been in theaters for only a few weeks but has already crossed a major worldwide box office milestone, crossing a total of $500 million over the four-day Memorial Day weekend. Of this total, $399.3 million came from the international markets, with $108 million from the domestic box office, making for a grand, worldwide total of $507.26 million. Compared to the rest of the Fast & Furious franchise, the performance of Fast X is above the earnings of F9 and Hobbs & Shaw, but below those of The Fate of the Furious ($541.9 million) and Furious 7 ($397.6 million). Overall, the entire franchise has so far earned over $7 billion globally.
Fast X Tops the International Box Office
Additionally, the film quickly dominated the international box office upon its theatrical release, making it the second-highest worldwide opening of 2023 at the time and the second-largest overseas take for the Fast franchise behind The Fate of the Furious. In its first weekend in theaters, Fast X earned approximately $80.3 million in China alone.
Fast X, the tenth installment in the Fast & Furious Saga, stars Jason Momoa as Dante, the son of Brazilian drug kingpin Hernan Reyes who was brought down by Dom and his crew in 2011’s Fast Five. Momoa boarded the sequel in January 2022 alongside Charlize Theron, who will return to the franchise as the criminal mastermind Cipher, first introduced in 2017’s The Fate of the Furious.
Franchise star Vin Diesel announced that production had begun on the tenth Fast and Furious movie in February 2022. Before Fast 9 even entered development, Diesel was planning for Fast X to be the first of a two-part final installment in the Fast Saga, which began with The Fast and the Furious in 2001. However, he recently revealed that the franchise’s two-part finale will expand into a trilogy. “Going into making this movie, the studio asked if this could be a two-parter,” Diesel said. “And after the studio saw this one, they said, ‘Could you make the finale, a trilogy?'”
Fast X is now in theaters.
