Henry Cavill Saw ‘The Flash’ And Loved Its New Supergirl
Written by on June 1, 2023
There is a whole lot of positive buzz about The Flash, which honestly, is kind of a miracle given the controversy around both Ezra Miller and the destruction of the Snyder-era DCEU ahead of James Gunn’s takeover. But the film seems like it will use Flashpoint as perhaps a bridge between eras, and everyone who’s seen it seems to be singing its praises.
One of those people appears to be…Henry Cavill himself.
The ex-Superman will not return for the role in the James Gunn era, despite the Dwayne Johnson-arranged tease in Black Adam. But he’s allegedly seen the film, and has high praise for his effective replacement in it, Sasha Calle’s Supergirl, who in this alternate timeline, is the big Super instead of Clark Kent.
Calle said that she met Cavill after the movie was done and asked him about her performance as Kara:
“Yes, I met him,” Calle told Entertainment Weekly. “I met him actually after the movie was done, months later. I gave him a big hug. You know, it’s Henry Cavill, man! Our Man of Steel. He is kind and very proper, and it was a great experience.”
“I asked him, ‘Did I make you proud, cuz? Does Superman approve? And he was like, ‘Absolutely. You did a phenomenal job.’ I think, to me, that meant the world, because it’s Henry Cavill, Man of Steel.”
There’s additional reporting that Cavill saw The Flash itself and “loved it,” and Calle also said in other interviews that in addition to Cavill, she also spoke with Melissa Benoist, who played Supergirl for her CW series for six seasons, with the show recently ending in 2021 (and the Arrowverse ending a short while after, this year).
I remember back when this was supposed to be the “new era” of DC with Calle’s Supergirl and Leslie Grace’s Batgirl. It’s wild to think that now, Calle’s Supergirl may be a co-star of one of the best DC films in recent memory, while Grace’s Batgirl movie was deemed actively harmful to DC and it was scrapped entirely despite being completed. That remains such a bizarre situation.
I don’t really know Henry Cavill’s taste in movies, but I know he is a huge stickler for nerd lore, to the point where he quit The Witcher because they were deviating from the source material too much. So I am going to assume that Calle does a great version of Supergirl that not only continues his legacy, but also stays true to the comics she’s pulled from. We’ll see for ourselves soon enough.
