Indiana Jones 5 has set an unwanted record ahead of release

Written by on May 31, 2023

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has set an unwanted record on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes ahead of its official release in cinemas next month.

The fifth Indiana Jones instalment had its world premiere at Cannes Film Festival on May 18, but it seems the critics in attendance weren’t impressed by the film, which currently sits at 49% on Rotten Tomatoes from 43 reviews.

Given the critic scores for previous films in the franchise (93% for Raiders of the Lost Ark, 84% for Last Crusade, 77% for Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and 76% for Temple of Doom), this makes it the lowest Tomatometer rating of the series to date by a large margin.

This score is likely to fluctuate as more critics get to watch James Mangold’s film over the coming weeks, while audiences will be able to share their own thoughts on Indy’s final adventure from next month.

Dial of Destiny will see Harrison Ford reprise his role as the legendary archaeologist for the fifth and final time, though Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy recently teased that the franchise could continue on TV in the future.

“It’s Harrison’s last entry. That’s how we look at the Indy franchise,” she told Entertainment Weekly‘s Dagobah Dispatch podcast.

Kennedy continued: “I mean, truthfully, right now, if we were to do anything, it might be in series television down the road, but we’re not doing anything to replace Indiana Jones.

“This is it. It’s five movies that Harrison Ford did. And Harrison is so specific and so unique to creating this role. We just… Steven [Spielberg] agrees, we just wouldn’t do that.”

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is released in UK cinemas on June 28 and in US cinemas on June 30.
