DC’s New Hero Is So Powerful, Even Darkseid Is Desperate to Recruit Him
Written by on May 29, 2023
Warning: SPOILERS for City Boy #1There’s a brand-new street-level hero in the DC Universe, and he’s so powerful that even Darkseid wants to control him. If Darkseid gets his hands on him, who know what City Boy could do to the DC Universe.
Darkseid reveals his interest in new hero Cameron Kim on the final page of City Boy #1 by Greg Pak, Minkyu Jung, Sunny Gho, and Wes Abbott. City Boy accidentally gets himself involved with a seemingly innocuous gang after trying to help an unhoused man in his neighborhood. The gang discovers his powers—which include a connection to the consciousness of a city, allowing him to find nearly anything within a city’s limits, including valuables—and tries to violently coerce him into working for them. City Boy then lets out a massive surge of energy in order to stop the gang leader.
The scene immediately cuts to outside the building, where its revealed that Bruno Manheim and Intergang had been tracking City Boy through his energy surges. Manheim is on a video call with the intergalactic dictator Darkseid, who says “tell me only…when he is mine.” Darkseid wants City Boy—but why?
New DC Hero City Boy’s Powers Could Be a Huge Threat
Darkseid, of course, is one of the DC Universe’s most powerful and threatening villains. A dictator from the planet Apokolips, his singular goal is to control the universe by using the Anti-Life Equation, which theoretically eradicates free will. He is a true threat, often overpowering even the full might of Superman and the Justice League. City Boy, on the other hand, is one of DC’s newest young heroes. City Boy #1 is part of a trio of new titles featuring Asian creators and characters under the “We Are Legends” imprint. Along with Xanthe of Spirit World and the mysterious new team called the Vigil, City Boy, a Korean-American hero, is making waves in the DC Universe with his massively powerful connection to the living consciousnesses of DC’s famous cities, including Gotham, Metropolis, and more.
City Boy may be one of DC’s newest heroes, but he’s already proving to have an important role in DC’s larger story, especially if Darkseid is ready to intervene. Not only is Cameron’s power set truly unique, it’s powerful enough to attract one of the most notorious intergalactic villains in the universe, and apparently Darkseid and his minions have been tracking him for quite a while. If Darkseid manages to get ahold of City Boy and either coerce him or control his powers, there’s no telling what the villainous dictator might do.
One thing is for sure: this is bad news for Cameron Kim and the entire DC Universe. Despite that, City Boy #1 is the last of three incredibly enticing debut issues for the We Are Legends imprint. These three stories are off to three equally strong starts. Readers will have to following along with City Boy and Cameron Kim to discover just what Darkseid is planning for this new hero.
