Scream 7 Fanmade Poster Imagines Matthew Lillard’s Stu Macher Return
Written by on May 28, 2023
A Scream 7 fan poster imagines what the movie’s advertising might look like if Stu Macher returned as Ghostface. The character, who was played by Matthew Lillard, was one of the two killers in the original 1996 Scream and was killed at the end of the movie by having a TV smashed on his head by Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell). However, fan theories have been swirling around Stu’s potential return ever since the franchise came back to theaters with 2022’s Scream and 2023’s Scream VI, neither of which featured Stu, though Lillard did have a voice-only cameo in Scream.
As hype builds for another installment, professional poster designer Creepy Duck Design shared an unofficial poster for the as-yet unconfirmed follow-up Scream 7, teasing Stu’s Scream franchise return.
The poster bears the tagline “Surprise, Sidney,” which was a line spoken by Stu during the killer reveal at the end of the original movie. It also features Ghostface punching through the television that was used to “kill” Stu, which features a faded image from the original movie.
Could Stu Come Back in the Scream Franchise?
At the time of writing, Scream 7 hasn’t been officially greenlit by Paramount, however, it is more than likely to go into production sometime in the next few years, possibly after the end of the ongoing 2023 writers strike. Scream VI was a box office hit and became the highest-grossing installment in the franchise by the end of its run earlier this year, making a sequel seem somewhat inevitable.
While no former Ghostface killers have ever returned to the franchise, the production team behind the new Scream movies have sent quite a few mixed signals about Stu’s return, both behind the scenes and onscreen. For instance, in Scream VI, Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) has a line confirming that there are rumors that Stu isn’t actually dead, though another death later in the movie uses the same TV that killed Stu to kill one of the Ghostfaces, proving that method’s overall effectiveness.
It’s also possible that Scream 7 won’t be made by the same production team, Radio Silence. The crew is continuing their collaboration with Scream star Melissa Barrera in a new Universal monster movie, but this may prevent them from being able to return for the sequel should it be greenlit soon and rushed into production. If a new team is on board, it would be quite difficult to predict which direction they choose to go as far as Stu’s status goes.
