Runaways Is the First Marvel Series Removed From Disney+
Written by on May 27, 2023
Marvel’s Runways is no longer streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
In mid May 2023, the news broke that a number of shows and specials would be leaving both Disney+ and Hulu, including Willow and The Mysterious Benedict Society. While originally left off this initial list, on May 27, Marvel fans (via The Direct) discovered that Runaways had been removed from both streaming services as well. The move makes Runaways the first adapted Marvel series to be removed from the platforms after it began as a Hulu Original series.
The Runaways were a team created by writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Adrian Alphona in 2003, comprising the children of different Marvel villains. The team’s comic title ran for 100 issues before coming to an end in 2021. The television series adapted these comics and premiered on Hulu in Nov. 2017, running for three seasons total before it was canceled in late 2019. The series was set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and even crossed over with Freeform’s Cloak & Dagger series.
As of writing, the removal of Marvel’s Runaways from both Hulu and Disney+ calls into question its status as canon to the MCU. Similar to Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series originally aired on ABC, despite being set within the MCU, the events of Runaways have not been acknowledged by Marvel Studios’ main connected films and series. Runaways three-season run released prior to Marvel Studios’ first official Disney+ series, WandaVision, which premiered in Jan. 2021.
The removal of content from Disney+ is part of “strategic changes,” according to Disney CFO Christine McCarthy, over an impairment charge change of $1.5 to $1.8 billion. Another change for the platform is that less content will be produced for Disney+ in the future. Disney CEO Bob Iger previously said, “I’m really pleased that the support that I’m getting from the content creators of the company is significant and real, and it comes in the form of reducing the expense per content, whether it’s a TV series or a film, where costs have just skyrocketed in a huge way and not a supportable way in my opinion. They all agree to that.”
The Disney+ content purge has drawn mixed reactions from creators and actors, however. Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston urged fans to watch his movie The One and Only Ivan before it was removed from Disney+. Meanwhile, Willow writer and showrunner Jonathan Kasdan explained that he is “kinda into” the series being removed and how it makes it feel “more special.” As for The Mysterious Benedict Society star Kristen Schaal, she tweeted out to fans asking how her series can be burned onto a DVD, this way she can show it to her daughter one day.
Marvel’s Runways is still available for purchase digitally.
