ICYMI, earlier this month, news broke that Kim Kardashian decided to drop a casual $197,453 to bring home a piece of modern royal history. Specifically, she’s the proud new owner of Princess Diana’s iconic Attallah cross, an enormous amethyst-and-diamond cross necklace that was made in the 1920s by court jewelry company Garrard.

The stunning statement piece was most famously worn by Diana (although not technically owned by the royal), and here’s a quick pic of her wearing it at a fancy pants charity gala in October 1987, along with a Catherine Walker dress and an epic updo:

Kim picked up the necklace at an auction and now this royal history can go live in Southern California and visit her aesthetically neutral home (while presumably living most of the time in a high-security bank vault somewhere, what with it being $200K worth of royal history and all).

Wondering how the royal family feels about reality TV royalty owning a piece of Princess Diana fashion history? Same, tbh, and, thankfully, there’s a royal expert for that.

“I think they probably laugh at it. Laugh about it over the breakfast table and move on,” Valentine Lowe, royal expert and author of Courtiers: Intrigue, Ambition and the Power Players Behind the House of Windsor predicted of the royal fam’s reaction during a recent chat with Us Weekly. “[They] certainly wouldn’t be annoyed, I [don’t] think.”

While Diana’s October 1987 gala look was her most famous fashion moment with the Attallah cross, Sotheby’s explained in an Instagram post that the late royal borrowed the piece several times over the years (from its owner, Naim Attallah CBE) and that “it is understood that the cross was only ever worn by the Princess, and following her death, it was never seen in public again until now.”

Currently accepting bets on how likely it is that Kim will break that streak and wear it to the Met Gala this year, with current odds ranging from “probably” to “100 billion percent for sure.”
