CLIMATE CHALLENGE: The floods that hit the country last year inflicted losses worth a whopping $30 billion, whereas the challenge of immediate reconstruction and rehabilitation needs a good $16bn. While the country is already facing a massive budget deficit, the fact is that the process of rehabilitation and reconstruction cannot be, and should not be, delayed. There are more than 30 million flood-hit people merely surviving in refugee camps in this freezing winter.

STRAY DOGS: As much as I respect the court’s decision against inhumane treatment of stray dogs, I am worried about their increasing number. The stray dogs move in packs, and chase or attack humans whenever they so wish. For the last few months, I have been lodging complaints on the government helpline after being chased by several dogs during my morning walk, but to no avail. The relevant authorities should take swift action to rid our streets of stray dogs as they pose a threat that may well prove to be fatal.

EXORBITANT PRICES: I recently visited a mall in Multan and was surprised to know the price of 1kg almonds there was Rs1,900. I happened to be in Quetta recently, and the price of 1kg almonds of the same variety was Rs1,000. The difference is not just huge, but unacceptable. There has to be some kind of price check mechanism in place.

INEXPLICABLE EXCLUSION: The announcement related to the holding of a special Central Superior Services (CSS) examination is a welcome step meant to fill the vacant slots. However, the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC), for some inexplicable reason, has excluded Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) for the said examination. This has caused dismay and depression among the aspirants who hold GB domiciles. The decision does not serve any purpose.
