Nuclear Supervisory Body to Report Directly to the President

Summary

The government is getting more serious in its efforts to develop the nuclear power potential in the country. This can be seen in Government Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perppu) No. 2/2022, which revised several regulations related to nuclear power. This includes the change in structures of the Nuclear Supervisory Agency, which directly reports to the president. The supervisory body is in charge of supervision of all nuclear power utilization activities. This is stipulated in Section (6) of Article 4 Point 1 of Perppu No. 2/2022, besides revising the sentence in Article 4 Section 1 of Law No. 10/1997 concerning Nuclear.

In addition, there are essential points regarding the development of nuclear power potential. Article 9 Section 1 of Perppu No. 2/2022 emphasizes that the state fully controls nuclear excavation materials. Then, Article 9 Section 2 states that the central government determines the nuclear excavation material mining business area in accordance with applicable regulations. Nuclear excavation material mining includes mining activities that produce radioactive-related minerals. The regulation also revises the previous Article 9 Section 1 of the Nuclear Law, which stipulates general investigations, exploration, and exploitation of nuclear excavation materials are only carried out by the executive agency.
