iPhone 14 Pro (Max) and iOS 16 hidden tips and tricks

iPhone owners can squeeze their hands because both the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) and the new iOS, iOS 16, there is a lot of new to discover. Dynamic Island opens up a whole world, while older models are also provided with new features. We give you some iPhone 14 Pro and iOS tips and tricks!

iPhone 14 Pro (Max): Swipe away on the Dynamic Island

New on the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) you get the Dynamic Island. A small pill-shaped area on your screen where the selfie camera is hidden behind and in which you can see notifications and more. As we already indicated in our iPhone 14 Pro review, it is a great addition to the device, which you can also do a lot with. Did you know, for example, that you can do all kinds of things with gestures on the dynamic level of the iPhone 14 Pro?

You can do all kinds of things with the island with different results. Below are a few examples:

Tap on the island:

  • During calls: call up the call menu
  • While listening to music: Play/Pause, next or previous track and track information
  • With Apple Pay: confirm or cancel a transaction
  • During FaceTime: Turn speaker, microphone or camera on or off, hang up and more

To swipe from left to right:

  • If there is one activity running in the Dynamic Island: hide the displayed activity
  • With two active activities in the Dynamic Island: hide the activity that is displayed and set the activity behind it to the foreground of the island

Swipe from right to left:

  • If there are two activities running in the Dynamic Island, but you have already hidden one via the step above: unhide the hidden activity and set the activity behind it to the foreground of the island
  • If you have hidden all ongoing activities in the Dynamic Island: unhide a hidden activity (by swipe)

The Dynamic Island is still new and not all apps work with it yet, but the list of apps is growing steadily. For example, there is already a Reddit app called Apollo that makes it possible to display small pixelated animals around your island. This way you have a Tamagotchi on your iPhone that you can also give food and the like!

iOS 16: Protect a private note

Notes in your iPhone are incredibly useful. Think of a shopping list, a small scribble or a comment about something or someone. Not everything you write down you want to share with others who have your phone in their hands. In the Notes app on iPhones, you can now lock a specific note behind FaceID authentication. That way you put sensitive content under lock and key, which requires your face to read it.

To enable this feature, go to Settings > Notes and then the Password option. In the next screen, choose the option Use device password and enable Use FaceID. To lock a note, long press the desired note in the app. Then you can lock the chosen note in the pop-up.

iPhone 14 Pro (Max): Black & White Always On Display

The iPhone 14 Pro (Max) has an Always On display. This does not completely turn off the screen when you lock it, but you continue to see the clock and notifications, for example. It is a handy function that does not consume too much battery and does not unnecessarily unlock your phone. The disadvantage of this is that your screen remains on in its full glory, which can sometimes be a bit distracting. You can disable this option in the menu of your iPhone, but then you will no longer see your clock.

Now there’s a trick to get a slightly less distracting Always On display. To do this, you need to look for the Focus option in your iPhone’s settings. There you choose Options and activate the Dim Lock Screen option. This option ensures that your iPhone screen is darkened, while Always On remains active. Your clock and selected widgets will now be black and white.

A small disadvantage is that this only works if you have the Dim Lock Screen Focus mode on. In addition, widgets from apps such as Spotify are not offered in black and white. These will therefore continue to appear in color.

iOS16: Battery Percentage Indicator

If you are careful with your battery, it is useful to have it provided with a percentage or color, to know exactly how empty your battery is. iPhones already had such an option with the power save mode that immediately let your phone save some energy. A handy option, but one that you had to turn on again and again.

iOS 16 brings a handy new addition that makes your battery indicator a little clearer. You can now see the battery percentage as standard at the top right of your screen. Although this option does not put your phone in power save mode, it is nice to know where you stand.

To activate this option, go to Settings > Battery and enable the ‘battery percentage’ option. The power save option works the same as before and unfortunately still has to be turned on after charging.

iPhone 14 Pro (Max): Harnessing the full 48 Megapixel of the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) camera

The iPhone 14 Pro is equipped with a monster of a camera. No less than 48 Megapixels adorns the main lens, but you don’t use it as standard. Instead, shoot your snaps in 12MP. Apple has added an option in the camera menu to release this power, namely the ProRAW photo mode. Not only does this mode let you enjoy the raw power of the iPhone 14 camera, but it also lets you edit your photos extensively and in great detail in software like Adobe Lightroom, making them stand out from the crowd. You can, among other things, adjust the exposure, color tones and white balance without loss of quality.

To activate ProRAW, go to Settings > Camera > File Formats. There you can activate Apple ProRAW. Now the option is not immediately enabled, but you have the choice in the camera app whether or not you want to shoot photos in ProRAW by clicking on the icon. There are a few notes: ProRAW photos are huge in size (this could just be 50MB), not in the standard JPEG or HEIC format and therefore not suitable for social media without first editing.

Apple ProRAW is not only available on the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) by the way. The Pro (Max) models of the iPhone 12 and 13 also have this option, only these devices do not have a 48MP lens on board. There you have to make do with a maximum of 12MP.

iOS 16: Edit or Delete iMessages

Anyone who uses Telegram to send messages already knows the phenomenon of editing or deleting messages. An incredibly handy function, because how quickly do you go wrong and send a message to the wrong person or do you just make a typo in that one important message? iOS 16 also brings this option to iMessage, allowing you to correct mistakes or delete messages you didn’t want to send. Useful!

To edit a message, long press on a sent message. You will now be presented with Edit and Undo Send options. Choose the option you want to use at that time. Note that people who are not using iOS 16 will still see everything (and without changes), as their iPhone does not support this option.

iOS 16: Bonus tricks from previous iOS versions

iOS 16 has also inherited some nice features from previous operating systems. Sometimes these are useful features that really help you and other times they are nice additions. For example, Harry Potter fans can go wild with their ‘own spells’ with Siri. When you activate Siri and say Lumos, your flashlight will turn on. If you then say active Nox with Siri, the light will go out again.

Another handy addition is that your iPhone has several shortcuts. For example, if you want to take a quick screenshot, you can tap the back of your phone twice since iOS 14 and you’re done. You have to activate this function in Settings > Accessibility > Touch and then Tap on the back. There you can also control what happens when you tap three times and also choose other functions when tapping such as starting the camera, increasing the volume or turning on the flashlight.
