Eatman: Hey Dak, This Is Your New-Look Cowboys
Written by ABC AUDIO on October 24, 2022
On the one hand, this was a return of the Cowboys’ franchise quarterback who has been sidelined for five weeks.
On the other hand, this felt like an introductory of sorts, where Dak Prescott was introduced to his new and (definitely) improved football team.
Sure, this is Dak’s seventh year with the Cowboys. But never, and let’s add a couple of “ever and evers” to that, has he played with a defense like this.
In Week 1 against the Buccaneers, the Dallas defense wasn’t this good. And at no point in Dak’s career has he played with a defense that has the ability to just dominate like this.
OK, I get it. The Lions aren’t exactly … the Eagles, the team that took it to the Cowboys last week. The Lions aren’t really any of the high-powered offenses in the league.
Still, they’re good enough to get more than two field goals. They’re a good enough team that they should be able to give opponents some problems throughout the game. But it didn’t happen because the Cowboys rose to the challenge – one they presented to themselves after the way they played against Philadelphia last Sunday.
Let’s be honest, it had to be something astronomical to overtake Dak’s return as the storyline of the game, but that’s what happened. That’s how good this Cowboys defense played on Sunday against a Lions offense that entered the day scoring 30 more points than the Cowboys (140-110). Technically, Detroit has still outscored the Cowboys this year, but if this game proves anything, it’s that stat doesn’t really matter at all.

The Lions are 1-5 because they really have problems on defense. The Cowboys are 5-2 because they are a problem on defense, evident Sunday by its ability to take over a game in the second half.
Five turnovers after halftime, including a crucial fumble recovery at the 1-yard line when it appeared the Lions were about to take the lead. While that play might be more in the “fortunate” category, it’s still making a play on the goal line, creating a force that caused a fumble and then Anthony Barr’s alert recovery.
After that, the turnovers were all about making plays and/or pressure applied. Trevon Diggs is one of the best receivers on this team, and just happens to play cornerback. He did it again Sunday with a play on the ball that most corners don’t have the ability to make. Also, Jourdan Lewis got a pick because of the pressure Micah Parsons gave off the edge.
And let’s talk about Mr. Parsons. This dude clearly was upset with the way last week’s game ended against the Eagles. Of course, he would be. The Cowboys had a shot to get off the field and perhaps steal a win in Philly, but the defense couldn’t get that necessary stop.
Frustration was at an all-time high, especially with Parsons. But even when things didn’t get off to a great start on Sunday, it never felt like the defensive players tried to press and do too much. Even playing within themselves, they still made huge plays.
None bigger was the one Parsons made by chasing down tight end Brock Wright at the 1-yard line, setting up a fumble on the next play.
That’s the kind of play that makes Parsons – in my mind – the best defensive player in football because he has the ability to dominate on so many different levels.
And that’s what made this game interesting. It’s a team that Dak Prescott isn’t really used to. OK, he’s had a front-row seat for the last few games with Cooper Rush filling in at quarterback. Dak knew the defense was carrying the team through the four-game winning streak.
But it’s one thing to be on the sideline and another to be in the middle of it. This is something that he’s going to get used to – maybe he figured it out in the second half of this game.
There will be some games where three points in the first half is going to be a problem. But more often than not, with this defense, the game will still be reachable even after a half like that.
That style of football will put more emphasis on running the ball, throwing it away when there’s pressure, maybe punting instead of going for it or kicking long field goals.
Again, it’s a style we’ve seen for a month. It’s a style that is new to Dak.
Trust me, there will be plenty of games that are tougher than this one. Not saying that Dak returning and scoring some second-half touchdowns is a cure to everything.
But I bet it’s safe to assume he’s going to play better. The rust will be shaken off by next week and this offense will continue to jell. In the meantime, they can lean on this defense, something Dak hasn’t been able to do on a consistent level throughout his career.
He did on this day. And he’ll likely be able to moving forward.
And it doesn’t matter how many years he’s been in the league or how many millions are in his contract. This is the new Cowboys and there’s nothing wrong with embracing it.
Hendershot ‘Thankful’, Sets Record With 1st TD
Peyton Hendershot has gone from an undrafted talent to one helping fellow rookie Jake Ferguson set a franchise record through their first seven games together
ARLINGTON, Texas – It was National Tight Ends Day and Dak Prescott made sure the Dallas Cowboys celebrated by leaning on theirs to help defeat the visiting Detroit Lions in Week 7. Dalton Schultz returned to battle through a knee injury to reel in all five of his targets for 49 yards and rookie Peyton Hendershot left his own imprint on the 24-6 victory.
The undrafted former Indiana standout reeled in his first-ever NFL touchdown late in the fourth quarter – following a sack and takeaway by fellow rookie Sam Williams – to nail the coffin shut.
“It was a blessing,” “I can not describe the words for it. I’m very blessed and thankful to be a Dallas Cowboy.”
Hendershot wasn’t the only player open on the play, however.
So was the other rookie tight end, Jake Ferguson, not far away from Hendershot – the former being the first to rush over and congratulate the latter in the back of the end zone. Ferguson scored his first-ever NFL touchdown just last week in what was nearly a comeback win for the Cowboys against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The young duo has now made franchise history – 2022 marking the first season in the existence of the club wherein two rookie tight ends have both scored touchdowns.
“One of the best rookie classes I’ve seen in my seven years here,” said Dak Prescott of what he’s seeing from Hendershot, Ferguson and, as a related aside, from others like Sam Williams, the defensive up-and-comer having racked up a breakout day against the Lions.
“I feel like I said that last year and then to have this class come in – the way they approach each and every day.”
Fun times are being had for the 5-2 Cowboys, including what Prescott had to deal with when he went to the sideline after tossing the touchdown to Hendershot.
“On that touchdown, what’s funny is Jake [Ferguson] went to the flat and to the right is the first read,” Prescott explained with a smile. “Jake’s the second read. And when I looked at him he was covered, but then I see Peyton [Hendershot] in the back of the end zone [doing jumping jacks] – so I throw it. They were giving me stuff on the sideline like, ‘Oh, you didn’t throw it to Jake because he scored last week?’
“It’s [National] Tight End Day so let’s feed them all. It’s great for the two young guys.”
All Hendershot knows is that, on that play, he put his play recognition and ability to separate on display, and there was nothing left to do from there but hope Prescott saw him.
“We ran the same play with the same shift and motion ,” said Hendershot. “I kept seeing my guy shoot the edge and I ran the over, and I was wide open and no one was around. … Jake Ferguson was wide open, too. I thought [Prescott] was gonna throw it to him but he chose to throw it to me.
“I’m just blessed and thankful for it.”
Is this the first of many to come for the beaming young tight end from North Salem?
“Yes, sir,” he replied.
Enough said.
RECAP: Lions at Cowboys
ARLINGTON – A defensive battle highlighted the first 30 minutes of Sunday’s matchup between Detroit and Dallas, with Detroit’s defense leading the charge to a 6-3 halftime lead.
It continued to be a defensive showdown into the fourth quarter, but in the end, Dallas capitalized on four fourth-quarter turnovers by the Lions’ offense to spearhead a 24-6 win. The loss drops Detroit to 1-5 on the season.
Sunday’s loss wasn’t on the Lions’ defense. For a second straight game the Lions’ offense failed to record a touchdown and had critical turnovers. Detroit was shorthanded offensively with running back D’Andre Swift (inactive) and wide receiver DJ Chark (IR) out, and slot receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown left with a concussion in the first quarter, but that’s no excuse for how poor they’ve played the last two weeks.
Dallas scored the game’s first touchdown following Lions quarterback Jared Goff’s fifth interception of the season on the Lions’ opening possession of the second half at the Dallas 18-yard line. Trevon Diggs got the pick.
Dallas went 82 yards in seven plays and scored on an Ezekiel Elliott 1-yard touchdown run to give the Cowboys the first lead of the day at 10-6.
The Lions were in position to retake the lead early in the fourth quarter after a terrific drive positioned them with a 1st and goal at the Dallas 1-yard line. But running back Jamaal Williams fumbled the ball and it was recovered by linebacker Anthony Barr at the half yard line.
Detroit’s defense did a nice job to force a punt and give the offense another chance, but Goff was intercepted again, this time by cornerback Jourdan Lewis at the Dallas 47-yard line. Dallas turned that into another Elliott 1-yard touchdown with 2:46 left to give the Cowboys a 17-6 lead.
Dallas iced the game on Goff’s third turnover, a strip-sack fumble at the Detroit 23-yard line they turned into a 2-yard Peyton Hendershot touchdown to give them a 24-6 lead.
Fittingly, the game ended on a couple kneeldowns after another Goff fumble, Detroit’s fifth turnover of the game.
QB comparison: It was a forgettable day for Goff, who ended up turning the ball over three times. He finished 21-of-26 passing for 228 yards with no touchdowns, two interceptions and two fumbles. He was sacked five times and finished with a 71.2 passer rating.
Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was playing in his first game since injuring his thumb Week 1. He was an efficient 19-of-25 passing for 207 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions for a 113.2 rating.
Worth noting: Cornerback Jeff Okudah was all over the AT&T Stadium turf Sunday. He was terrific supporting the run and finished the day with 15 tackles, including a tackle for loss that forced a first-half punt. It was Okudah’s best game of the year.
Lions rookie pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson notched sacks No. 4 and 5 on the year. He finished with three tackles, two sacks, three quarterback hits and a tackle for loss.
No. 2 tight end Brock Wright caught all four of his targets for 57 yards. Wright came into the game with just one catch on the season for 25 yards.
Rookie debut: Second-round pick Josh Paschal made his NFL debut Sunday after sitting out the first five games of the season rehabbing a sports hernia surgery he had over the summer.
Paschal got good push along the interior and totaled two tackles in the contest.
Injury report: St. Brown caught a 4-yard pass on a 2nd and 11 play at the Dallas 21-yard line late in the first quarter and took a shot to the back of the head as he was going to the ground.
As he got to his knees, St. Brown shook his head a bit. He got to his feet and an official took him out of the game to be evaluated. St. Brown went into the medical tent on the sideline for a number of minutes and then emerged and went right to the locker room. Shortly after, the team ruled him out with a concussion.
Cowboys lean on defense in Prescott’s return, top Lions 24-6
ARLINGTON, Texas — — Dak Prescott made sure to remember what he watched during the five games the star quarterback missed with a fractured right thumb.
The Dallas defense has things under control.
Ezekiel Elliott ran for two 1-yard touchdowns, Prescott threw for a score in his return and the Cowboys forced five turnovers in a 24-6 victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
Dallas (5-2) recovered Jamaal Williams’ fumble inside its 1 with a four-point lead early in the fourth quarter.

Jared Goff was responsible for four other Detroit turnovers with two interceptions and two fumbles, while Prescott didn’t give the ball away.
Kind of like the formula Cooper Rush followed in winning the first four games without Prescott before three interceptions helped end the streak a week ago, when defending NFC East champs lost at undefeated division leader Philadelphia.
“It was important for me to see that and to recognize that and know coming back, don’t try to do too much,” Prescott said. “I’m just trying to play my role and make sure that I put this team in the best chance to win.”
The Lions (1-5) got a solid showing for three quarters from the NFL’s worst defense, but coach Dan Campbell fell to 0-11-1 on the road with the Lions in something of a homecoming for the Texas native.
Campbell’s frustration in a fourth consecutive loss showed when he threw his headset after Williams lost the ball in a pile and Anthony Barr recovered for Dallas with the Cowboys up 10-6.
Campbell said he threw the headset because he was trying to get a challenge of the previous play, when tight end Brock Wright was ruled down at the 1 on a 17-yard catch.
“I’m frustrated because we’re losing, just like I was last year,” said Campbell, whose record as Detroit’s coach dropped to 4-18-1. “But I’m not down, I’m not losing confidence. I’m not going to go hide in a corner.”
Goff’s first three turnovers led to Dallas touchdowns, starting with Trevon Diggs’ third interception of the season on a diving play inside the Dallas 20 with the Lions leading 6-3.
Elliott jump-started the ensuing 82-yard drive by hurdling DeShon Elliott on an 18-yard run. Tony Pollard ran for 28 yards two plays later, and the Cowboys took their first lead on Elliott’s 1-yard plunge.
Dallas didn’t have to go nearly as far after the next two turnovers from Goff.
Elliott’s second TD came after Goff was intercepted by Jourdan Lewis at the Dallas 46.
Goff then lost the ball on one of the first two sacks of rookie Sam Williams’ career, giving the Cowboys possession at the Detroit 24. Prescott threw a 2-yard scoring pass to rookie Peyton Hendershot.
“Everywhere I’ve been I broke the record, JUCO, high school, Ole Miss, now I’m trying to do it here,” Williams said. “Trying to leave my name on something positive.”
The first multi-TD game of the season for Elliott came after he took a hard shot to his right knee in the first half. Elliott had 57 yards on 15 carries, and Pollard rushed 12 times for 83 yards.
“He’s relentless,” Prescott said of Elliott. “When I saw the play, I thought it was a little ugly. He said he’d be good and wasn’t too long before he was jumping a guy.”
With shorter fields late, Prescott settled into a groove, finishing 19 of 25 for 207 yards.
“Starting with the command of the huddle and the whole operation, I thought he was really on point there,” coach Mike McCarthy said. “They’re big things that don’t show up in the stat column. I thought he had a winning performance today.”
Goff was 21 of 26 for 228 yards. Williams was effective with 79 yards on 15 carries, but had the critical mistake that kept the Lions from taking a fourth-quarter lead.
DALLAS HISTORY
Diggs has 17 career interceptions, tied for most in the NFL since he entered the league in 2020. Those picks have come in his first 35 games, giving him the second-most for a player in the Super Bowl era behind former Cowboys cornerback Everson Walls. Diggs tied Walls’ club record of 11 picks last season.
PUNTER GETS PAID
Detroit’s Jack Fox averaged 48 yards on three punts a day after the announcement of a three-year contract extension. The deal has the highest average annual value for punters at $3.8 million, according to Spotrac.
INJURIES
Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown was ruled out by the concussion protocol after leaving the game following his only catch in the first quarter. … RB De’Andre Swift missed his third consecutive game with ankle and shoulder injuries after the Lions were hopeful he could return. … Cowboys T G Matt Farniok was ruled out in the second half with a hamstring injury.
UP NEXT
Lions: Host Miami next Sunday.
Cowboys: Host Chicago next Sunday in the second of four consecutive matchups with NFC North teams.
