Warhammer 40,000: Shootas, Blood & Bitch Review – Complete Mayhem

Written by on October 23, 2022

In this Warhammer 40,000 Shootas, Blood & Bitch review you can read whether this is the co-op hit of the autumn.

The game looks fantastic at first. And what immediately stands out is the humor. As soon as an orc comes into view and starts talking nonstop, you have to laugh at all the nonsense this guy spews. Humor is also hidden in the levels, when you suddenly see posters with exaggerated language errors and sentences exaggerated, just to make the player laugh. That is if you pay attention to the details.

Plays Like an Orc With a Toothache

Although the 2D side-scroller has also been released on PC and PlayStation 4 and 5 and Xbox Series S and X, we played this game on the Switch. And oh, what is that crying with the cap on? Not normal! The loading times are so long that you can easily make a cup of coffee and have something to eat and the frame drops appear on your screen just as quickly as it can unexpectedly rain in the Netherlands. Really to cry and that is no exaggeration. For this review, we played the game offline co-op with two people (there is support for four players) and that was a bit of a struggle at times.

Warhammer 40,000: Shootas, Blood & Bitch runs at thirty frames per second and when you consider that the same creator is behind Guns & Cannoli 2 you wonder what could have gone wrong. A hard crash just before a final boss is not excluded so you have to play a whole piece again without mercy. And have you ever played a game in 2022 where your game jumps to a screen that you regularly think: ‘Shit, another lockup’, while you have just reached the end of a level? Oh no? Well, this game does that on a regular basis. So the performance is really bad; hopefully, it will be better on the other platforms. But our advice is already: please don’t buy this on the Switch (for sale for 19.99 euros).

Gameplay to Enjoy Mindlessly

Once you have ‘accepted’ that you have a game in your hands that makes you feel like you are going back ten years in time, you can certainly have fun with this title. Yes, your screen stutters a bit, but the gameplay is fun. It’s simply mindless entertainment for you and your friend(s). You run and jump through various levels while you can just talk to each other and talk stupidly. Let’s be honest: we gamers just need these kinds of games every now and then, right? You can simply do two things at once.

In Warhammer 40,000: Shootas, Blood & Bitch you earn money and with that you can unlock all kinds of weapons. The game has cool weapons, such as one gun that fires a lot of bullets that bounce off everything, so that you automatically hit various enemies. Also great is a flamethrower. Although you don’t do more than shoot as many guys and bosses as possible in the game, it’s good to see that some enemies ask for a different approach. For example, a crocodile can handle a flamethrower quite well, but finds bullets a little less funny. This is a matter of figuring out for yourself what works best. It’s a shame the enemies don’t have a life bar.

Nice And Simple Design

As far as your own skills are concerned, there aren’t that many. It’s a pretty basic game. You can walk, jump, activate a button to temporarily fire bullets in quick succession, melee attack, use your special ability, throw grenades and dash. That’s about it. The advantage is that you can set all buttons as you want. So if you think the controls feel a little strange at first, you can set everything up just the way you want.

In terms of co-op, the game is partly out of the picture. You can’t help each other once someone dies, but there is a cooldown of several seconds. On the other hand, what is beneficial is that you share life and bullets with each other. Especially if you fight a big boss together, it can be useful for your buddy to pick up some level when you are almost dead, so that you can continue together. This aspect is well put together.

Unfortunately, you do fly through the game that way. Enemies are mainly many, and not difficult. And the same can be said for the bosses. After the story you have an option to play versus against each other, but that is not really recommended and you can still play the game online.

Warhammer 40,000 Shootas, Blood & Bitch review – Nice, But That’s It

All in all, Warhammer 40,000: Shootas, Blood & Bitch had the potential to be a decent co-op title. There’s nothing wrong with mindless entertainment for four. Not everything has to be exciting or mega challenging to be fun. The game does have cool elements such as the humor, the details in the levels and the weapons. The only problem is that the loading times are really outdated and the framedrops with hard crashes really give the death blow. Unfortunately, the title of the game is more exciting than the execution…
