With worldwide box office earnings already in excess of $100 million, “Halloween Ends” is the breakout horror hit of 2022. And while pundits attribute the film’s success largely to Parker Finn’s chilling premise and a razor-sharp marketing campaign, its secret ingredient may well be Cristobal Tapia de Veer’s original score. Built around an obscure instrument that mimics human growls and moans, Halloween Ends’s otherworldly soundscape adds a layer of dread that lingers long after the credits roll.
“Parker not only wanted the scariest soundtrack of the year, but he also wanted it to be original,” says Tapia de Veer of the director’s original brief. To achieve this daunting goal, the Chilean-born composer knew he had to sidestep the genre’s obsession with synthesizers. “In recent years there’s been an obsession with retro ’80s sounds,” he says. “It’s very hard to plug in a synth and not sound like John Carpenter when you start doing scary things.”
Scary strings were also off the table given their hallowed status in horror. Instead, Tapia de Veer turned to the daxophone, which is essentially a thin wooden board played with a fiddle or double bass bow. “I was interested in it because you can play notes that sound like human voices,” he says, before adding wryly, “It sounds pretty weird.” The daxophone became the main instrument for the score, although synthesizers were still used sparingly .
Rather than questioning Tapia de Veer’s unique choice of instrument, the director immediately endorsed it. “I told Parker about it very early on and he was really excited about the idea of mimicking an evil laugh or moan,” he says. First, the Emmy-winning composer of “Black Mirror” and “The White Lotus” had to track down the instrument — and then learn how to play it. “I know how to use a bow,” says Tapia de Veer. “So I basically just improvised.”
It didn’t take long for the composer to create all sorts of eerie sounds. “I learned how to make the growling and screeching sounds pretty quickly,” he says. “And for a horror film, it was just a language I could understand and use.” Indeed, the disturbing tones of the daxophone became one of the film’s central themes.
As fun as this exercise was, Tapia de Veer will revisit more traditional instruments for the second season of The White Lotus.
Initially he wasn’t sure if he could return due to Halloween Ends commitments. The composer began revamping the title track and then fell in love with the project all over again. “They asked me to write music that would have operatic elements and instruments reminiscent of the Italian location,” he says. Tapia de Veer brought longtime collaborator Kim Neundorf on board to facilitate the job, and together they created “a really interesting score” that has been “adapted to Sicily”.
Tapia de Veer’s television work prepared him for features in many ways. He insists the approach is exactly the same, comparing making music for a film to scoring a pilot. “With a feature, you have a moment for each piece of music and then it’s over,” he says. “In a pilot you also have to define everything, pretty much everything has to be there as if it were a movie.” The main difference comes as the episodes progress and new music is created as the episodes progress.
Tapia de Veer credits his Emmy-winning score for The White Lotus with opening doors for him in the US. He now hopes that Halloween Ends will do the same for him in the film industry. “Maybe I’ll get more scare calls,” he muses aloud. “I love horror; it might be my favorite thing to watch.” However, he doesn’t want to be typecast. “I’m not a specialist, I’d love to do other projects…but I really love horror.
