While approaching Athens , the Approach Controller at Hellinikon Airport informed the pilot of the helicopter to head to Aegina, but then it disappeared from radar. Due to the bad weather, the helicopter crashed heavily into the sea surface and the five members died instantly.
Its wreckage was found five days later, off the coast of Souni , while of the five passengers, only the body of Sofia Befon was found, two months after the accident. On March 18, 2001, fishermen found the body of Sofia Befon on the beach of Balos in Chania.
According to the report , the helicopter veered to the left and crashed heavily into the sea surface. The rear of the helicopter detached, the cabin disintegrated and sank immediately.
It was mentioned by the committee that the air traffic controller of Mykonos airport sent the helicopter captain a previous weather report. According to this visibility was over 7km but the last weather report (which was not transmitted) said visibility was only 1km. Based on the finding , not even the Athens airport controller informed the Governor about the worsening weather conditions around the Elliniko area.
Sophia Befon had studied music for years, but had decided to pursue medicine, which she loved. She had even chosen the specialty of anesthesiologist. She had worked at the People’s Hospital and the Aretaiio, however she wanted to focus on emergencies as an emergency room doctor.
