Letter to the Editor: Proposed surprise medical billing legislation benefits insurance companies – Delaware State News

Written by on November 22, 2020

Anybody who believes that personal markets allow competitors, drive efficiencies and cut back prices must be very involved in regards to the shock medical billing “compromise,” STOP Shock Medical Payments Act (S. 1531), making its approach by Congress.

In idea, this laws requires any disputes between insurers and suppliers over so-called “out-of-market” care to go to arbitration. That sounds cheap till you dig into the main points. Arbitrators can be required to first contemplate “median in-network charges” over all different elements. So if the median in-network fee for a process is X, then the arbitrator can be required to rule that a health care provider or hospital receives X as cost. That’s not arbitration; it’s codifying rate-setting in federal legislation!

Additionally, contemplate who units these in-market charges. It’s the insurance coverage corporations! This laws would permit insurers to set the charges they pay to medical doctors and hospitals all throughout the nation. That’s not how a free-market financial system works.

Lastly, as funds from insurers inevitably shrink, native hospitals and medical doctors may exit of enterprise, threatening sufferers’ entry to care and the standard of care they obtain. Congress should reject this “compromise.” It’s a giveaway to the large insurers on the expense of sufferers and suppliers alike.
