Best Buy’s practically paying you to buy a Google Pixel 7

It’s no secret that we’re big fans of the new Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. Both phones are refined in design and targeted camera upgrades help the Pixel 7 Pro truly stand out from the more reasonably-sized and reasonably-priced Pixel 7. Retailers seem to really like them a lot too, as they’ve been running promotions on both models from the preorder window through the official launch and up to now. Google Store is offering trade-in deals while Amazon is offering gift cards, so Best Buy decided to up the ante by offering both.

Right now, you can get up to $650 off the Pixel 7 Pro with select trade-in devices and a $200 Best Buy e-gift card, and the Pixel 7 can get up to $600 off with the right trade-in plus a $100 gift card. This means with the right phone to trade in, Best Buy will not only give you a Pixel 7 flagship for free; they’ll pay you for doing so.

An important note on trade-ins here is that they cannot exceed the value of the phone, so if you try to trade in say an iPhone 11 Pro Max, you might not be able to trade it for a Pixel 7, but you can trade it in for a Pixel 7 Pro.

Best Buy’s usual deals are only if you activate the phone immediately through Best Buy at either AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Google Fi, but this deal is good on unlocked Activate Later phones that you can stick whatever SIM you want inside them. Even if you’re buying a carrier version, you can click Activate Later and wait for the phone to arrive intact and unspoiled before you activate it — or just stick your existing SIM inside of it and move on with your day.

Another important distinction to make with the Pixel 7: if you are on Verizon or AT&T, you’ll want to make sure you’re buying the carrier-specific model. For the Pixel 7, that’ll cost an extra $100 because it includes the costs of mmWave, but for the Pixel 7 Pro, all models cost the same. I don’t quite get why that is either, but if you were debating between a Pixel 7 or Pixel 7 Pro and are on AT&T or Verizon, this will take $100 of that $300 difference away.

The gift cards included with these purchases are delivered as e-gift certificates to Best Buy or Best Buy.com and will arrive within 60 days of your phone’s delivery — though for most it should show up after a couple of days. This means you’ll probably be able to put that $200 credit to use on those hot Black Friday doorbusters, or they’ll arrive by Christmas at the latest. But hey, free store credit is useful whenever it shows up.

Smartphones have come a long way in the last decade with powerful processors, dedicated chips for AI and ML tasks, ISPs with support for 100MP+ cameras, and more. Budget Android smartphones have improved over the years thanks to the trickle-down effect. But Android as an OS has also gotten heavier with time, requiring powerful hardware to run. And despite improvements, entry-level phones do not have the power to run the OS smoothly. This is why Google offers a Go edition of Android for low-end phones. Following the release of Android 13 in mid-August, Google has now announced the launch of Android 13 (Go edition).

Android 12 (Go edition) did not bring Material You to budget devices, with the release instead focusing on faster app launch times, app sharing using Nearby Share, and app hibernation. Android 13 (Go edition) changes that by bringing wallpaper-based dynamic theming, though you will be limited to four color schemes instead of the 16 you see on the full-blown version of the OS. Google Assistant’s Discover home screen is also making its way to Android 13 (Go edition), allowing you to access the Discover tab with a right swipe from your home screen. Like on regular Android phones, articles and videos recommended by Google will appear here to help you stay up to date with the latest happenings worldwide.

Android 13 (Go edition) adds support for Google Play system updates, so the big G can directly roll out important improvements without requiring an OS upgrade or taking more device storage. The entire process will happen without involving the phone’s manufacturer, which is usually the bottleneck in such scenarios. Google already rolls out monthly Play system updates for regular Android devices with new features, enhancements, and bug fixes. Besides the above improvements, Android 13 (Go edition) brings many other key Android 13 features like Notification Permissions and Per-app language settings.

Google Family Link has been around for a few years now, helping parents control how their children use technology to explore digital platforms and spaces. However, for as well-meaning and ambitious as it is, the app has left quite a bit to be desired, as we found out last year. Google finally looks like it’s starting to take the needed steps to really improve Family Link now, introducing a redesigned user interface for parents, and a couple of new features for helping keep children safe in the real world.

Google seems to understand there are a few Family Link features guardians use more than others, like screen time controls and settings for blocking access to certain apps. The redesigned interface lets parents access these controls more easily with a three-tab design. For instance, screen time limits are available under the Controls tab, with the addition of a new Today Only extension, so your child can finish watching something if there’s only a bit of it left — or if you’re just feeling particularly generous.

A new Highlights tab lets parents comb through data to see what their kid has been up to. The page helps you glance through recently installed apps, screen time, and app usage quickly. Google says this tab will get better with time, but for now, it features content from partners like the Family Online Safety Institute, to help parents discuss online safety with their kids.

The biggest change to Family Link could help keep your children safer. You can use the Location tab to see the real-time location of all your children on a single map.You can even set up geo-fencing-style alerts to be notified every time your child arrives at or leaves a location, like a friend’s house or school. The Location tab also has options for ringing your child’s device to locate it when lost.

All the aforementioned tabs and settings can send you notifications about your child’s activities. Google knows this and designed a new hub of sorts in the Family link app, accessible by hitting the notification bell up top. Requests to unblock websites, make purchases online, and install apps will also be available here.

Finally, Family Link has a new web interface for parents and children, so everyone in the family can use the app’s features remotely when their phone isn’t readily accessible. And if Family Link feels too complex or restrictive, you can always use dedicated apps for just the features you need, like Digital Wellbeing to combat doomscrolling and Google TV kids profiles to restrict YouTube access for younger viewers.
