Stranded dolphins: 15 MPs call on the government to suspend non-selective fishing techniques in the winter
According to the LPO, “more than 300 corpses of small cetaceans, the vast majority of common dolphins protected by law, have been discovered on the French coasts” since December 2022.

Several hundred dolphins have been discovered stranded in recent weeks on the Atlantic coast. Faced with these sad images, fifteen deputies are asking the government to ban non-selective fishing techniques for one month. “A winter suspension of non-selective fishing techniques in the most sensitive areas remains the only option to effectively protect dolphins”, write Sunday January 29 in a column in the Sunday Journal (paid article) these elected officials – three EELVs, three LFIs, three Renaissance, two Horizons, two LIOT, a MoDem and a PS – led by ecologist Nicolas Thierry.

“The government has decided on measures to document the phenomenon and repel dolphins from fishing areas by means of acoustic repellents”, recall the deputies in their text. But “the massacre continues, we must go further”. “We join our voices to those of scientists and NGOs to demand more effective action in the face of the ongoing massacre on our shores”, write the parliamentarians.

The League for the Protection of Birds (LPO) had called on Wednesday for an interruption of at least a month of certain fishing practices suspected of having caused the death of animals. According to the LPO, “more than 300 corpses of small cetaceans, the vast majority of common dolphins protected by law, have been discovered on the French coasts, more particularly in Vendée and Charente-Maritime” since December 2022.

Supermarkets may soon offer to return your plastic bottles for a sum of money. But behind this instruction hides an economic tussle between the town halls and the actors of the large distribution.
Discarded in nature, plastic bottles will take up to 1,000 years to degrade. Plastic pollutes, but how do you get rid of it? The government is considering setting up a deposit in supermarkets and the French are not against it. “In my mom’s time, we brought back the glass bottles and filled them or returned them,” explains a woman. Experiments already exist, such as in a supermarket in the North where in exchange for your bottle, the machine gives you a voucher.

A loss of one million euros
The bottles are then reduced to flakes and then recycled to make new ones. Currently, recycling mainly goes through yellow bins, a financial advantage for local authorities. The deposit is therefore seen with a bad eye. According to Jean-François Vigier, mayor of Bures-sur-Yvette (Essonne), the deposit would cause the municipality to lose a million euros. This loss could thus increase the household waste tax.
