Much has been made of Wilson and the offense he and his head coach are in charge of, which is suddenly moving like molasses. The Broncos rank 31st in the NFL in terms of offense, averaging a mediocre 15 points per game. What happens when they get to the red zone? Egad. These poor boys are dead last in the league, scoring on only 21% of their red zone visits. (In comparison, the Chargers score on 53.4 percent of their red zone trips.) Wilson was 2-of-15 with two interceptions on 10-plus yard throws against the Colts. Is that what a $245 million contract was worth? But not everything is his fault, especially considering Wilson has been playing with a partially torn lat muscle in his throwing shoulder. In any case, Hackett, the new head coach, must bear a significant amount of responsibility. The offensive play calls have been pedestrian at best, with Wilson rarely rolling out to pass. As if that weren’t enough, receivers have the most dropped passes in the NFL. Yes, things are bad all around here.
Okay, Denver fans, I’m kidding. At the very least, we’ll get the high-flying Chargers to square off against them, making this an intriguing battle of strength vs. strength. Justin Herbert has lived up to expectations, guiding the Chargers to the NFL’s second-best air attack, averaging 291 yards per game. So, despite the disgruntled Broncos fans and that offense, there is some interest in this game.
