New Movies Coming to Prime Video and Netflix in December 2022

Picture the scene: Baby Jesus lying in his manger, as Mary and Joseph kick back in front of the TV with a Chinese takeaway in hand, intermittently checking their iPhones and a baby monitor. A real 21st-century nativity. December is the month of holidays and celebrations and the best time to binge-watch. So here is the list of all the movies and series releasing on Netflix and Prime Video in December 2022.
Rather than spending light years scrolling through the same, familiar movies, Netflix has brought the new parents gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh this December in the form of a variety of new and original movies, from sequels like Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, to films from Academy Award-winning directors, such as Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths and Pinocchio. These are the Netflix original films set to debut on the streaming service as of December 2022… With the holiday season upon us and December soon arriving, Prime Video has released their new list of films arriving on the streaming site.
Troll (Dec. 1)
Has there ever been as aptly named a director for a film as Roar Uthaug directing Troll? In Uthaug’s movie we are introduced to the tale of a Norwegian troll who, after many dormant years, is awoken from its slumber by a volcanic eruption. A courageous paleontologist is instructed to prevent the demonic troll from causing deadly destruction to those around him.
Scrooge: A Christmas Carol (Dec. 2)
It wouldn’t be Christmas without a nod to the Dickensian era. Scrooge: A Christmas Carol due out at the beginning of the month, is an animated film adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. It documents the story of funeral director Ebenezer Scrooge, whose bleak, miserable outlook on life, and in particular Christmas, sees him visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve.
Nanny (Dec. 16)
Nikyatu Jusu made her directorial debut with the thought-provoking 2022 horror film Nanny, which follows an undocumented yet hopeful woman who emigrated from Senegal as she struggles with her new life in America while grieving for those she left behind. Anna Diop is brilliant as Aisha, who is hired on to care for a wealthy New York City couple’s young daughter while she attempts to save up enough money to bring her own son to the United States. Though she’s grateful for the lucrative opportunity, Aisha quickly realizes the affluent family secretly harbors dark and volatile tendencies that threaten all her hopes and dreams.
The taut picture offers an enlightening perspective on immigration, the American Dream and culture clashes while also delivering supernatural elements that will have you on the edge of your seat. Nanny premiered at the Sundance Film Festival where it was awarded the prestigious Grand Jury Prize, making Jusu the second black female director to win the accolade and the first horror film to do so.
Hotel for the Holidays
Riverdale breakout Madelaine Petsch and Aladdin star Mena Massoud teamed up for the festive, feel-good romantic comedy Hotel for the Holidays, in which the actress portrays the hard-working Georgia, a manager at the decadent Hotel Fontaine in New York City who oversees the many colorful guests and staff working throughout the holiday season. She finds herself torn between her affections for the charming hotel chef Luke (Massoud) and wordly ex-prince Raymond (Max Lloyd-Jones), turning both her personal and professional life upside during the hectic time of the year.
The cozy flick is sure to get you into the Christmas spirit, and features an ensemble cast including Jayne Eastwood (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) and Kayleigh Shikani (American Gods); it is the first Christmas-themed film to be released on Amazon Freevee, the company’s free streaming site.
