Legacy Will Feature One of DC’s Biggest Villains

Written by on May 26, 2023

A new rumor postulates that one of Superman’s most iconic villains will make their big screen debut in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman: Legacy.

According to DanielRPK and The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzalez (via Twitter), Brainiac will be in Superman: Legacy. Created by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino, Brainiac first appeared in 1958’s Action Comics #242 as a foe of Superman. The supervillain, usually depicted as a bald, green-skinned extraterrestrial android, is a known member of the Legion of Doom, making him a villain of the Justice League as well as the Superman family. Brainiac has been adapted to live-action and animation several times but has never appeared in a theatrical film.

What Is Superman: Legacy?

Superman: Legacy was first announced in December 2022, with Gunn writing the screenplay. In March 2023, the DC Studios co-CEO was confirmed to direct Legacy. Gunn also revealed that Legacy would be centered around the titular Man of Steel’s heritage and “how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes.” Other story details that have so far been revealed include the film beginning with Clark Kent already established as Superman and working at the Daily Planet.

The upcoming superhero reboot will be the first film installment in Gunn’s DC Universe, a new shared universe and successor of the DC Extended Universe that will encompass films, television, gaming and animation. Superman: Legacy was one of five films unveiled as part of Chapter 1 — Gods and Monsters — of the DCU, with the other four being The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: World of Tomorrow and Swamp Thing.

James Gunn Addresses Superman Casting Rumors

Although Henry Cavill played Clark Kent/Superman in the DCEU, the actor will not reprise the role in Superman: Legacy. Instead, Gunn will recast Superman and his supporting cast — Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, Jimmy Olsen, etc. — for his reboot, with those actors then portraying their respective characters throughout the DCU. While no casting has been officially announced yet, several up-and-comers have been reported to be in the running for the Big Blue Boy Scout. Pearl actor David Corenswet and X-Men actor Nicholas Hoult are among the actors mentioned, with Hoult reportedly also being considered for Lex Luthor.

After being repeatedly asked online if the Superman: Legacy casting reports were true, Gunn released a statement saying that he “would never comment on who is or isn’t AUDITIONING for a role. That’s the actor’s business only & isn’t something I’d make public unless they did it first after the fact (like [Glenn Howerton] or [ZacharyLevi] having auditioned for Star-Lord & being top choices).” He then revealed that “only one person has been CAST in Superman: Legacy, and it isn’t any of the regular players in the Superman world.” With Superman: Legacy set to begin filming at the top of 2024, it is only a matter of time before Gunn officially unveils the film’s cast.

Superman: Legacy opens in theaters on July 11, 2025.
