Wilson and his head coach are in command of an offense that is suddenly moving at a snail’s pace. Much has been made of Wilson’s erratic nature and the fact that he and his head coach are in charge of this offensive. The Broncos’ offense ranks 31st in the NFL, averaging only 15 points per game. And when they reach the danger zone? Egad. Only 21% of their trips into the red zone have resulted in touchdowns, which ranks them dead last in the league. (In contrast, the Chargers score touchdowns on 53.4% of their red zone trips.) Wilson went 2-of-15 with two interceptions on throws of 10 or more yards against the Colts. That is the value of a $245 million contract? Wilson has reportedly been playing with a partially torn lat muscle in his throwing shoulder, indicating that he is not solely responsible for this. Regardless, the new head coach, Hackett, bears a significant amount of responsibility. The offensive play calls have been lackluster at best, and Wilson appears to roll out to pass infrequently. Oh, and as if that weren’t enough, NFL receivers have the highest rate of dropped throws. Yes, it’s horrible everywhere here
Okay, I kid Denver fans, I kid. At least the high-flying Chargers will play them, making this a compelling strength-versus-strength matchup. Justin Herbert has lived up to the hype, guiding the Chargers to the second-best passing offense in the NFL with an average of 291 yards per game. In spite of the dejected Broncos supporters and that offense, there remains suspense surrounding this game.
