The movie also faced severe backlash following the release of the trailer when fans saw Bailey in the lead playing mermaid princess Ariel. Many debated over whether Ariel should be white or black, but many also hailed Disney’s move, calling it historic. However, this is one of the many attacks the movie has faced.

Of course, Halley Bailey’s Ariel is splashing at the box office with a grand three-day opening of $95.5 million at the domestic box office, while, as per reports, Disney’s live-action movie has fetched a gross of $185 million worldwide. But the skyrocketing numbers could not save the movie from review bombing. Negative reviews have surfaced at an unexpected rate on several platforms.

As of now, The Little Mermaid has 68% critics score out of 252 reviews while the film has got 95% verified audience score from more than 5000 reviews. On Google, the movie has an average rating of 3.5 out of 5 where 1-star rating is just behind the 5 stars with Google rating saying 51% like the film. IMDB in the UK, Brazil, and Mexico has issued warning labels against the negative reviews. Further, AlloCiné in France also posted advisories following the surface of questionable negative reviews on the platform.

“We are currently observing an unusual distribution of scores which demands the need for caution. We encourage you to make up your own mind about the film,” AlloCiné wrote.

The review attack on the Rob Marshall-directed film was thought to be utterly domestic where these controversies were started, but the movie got worldwide negative attention, perhaps after extensive trolling on the internet.

Review bombing is a recent trend that is being practiced by people to spread personal agendas with biased opinions. In recent history, several movies have been victimized. However, several review platforms are trying to tackle the review bombers.

Following a Deadline report, online movie database and review site IMDB has detected unusual voting activity for The Little Mermaid, which prompted the site to issue a warning to the audience.

“Our rating mechanism has detected unusual voting activity on this title. To preserve the reliability of our rating system, an alternate weighting calculation has been applied,” the note appeared on U.S., Canada, UK, Brazil, and Mexico sites read.

IMDB also said that weighted vote averages would be the priority over rather than raw data averages in determining the final rating. The site has applied a new method to preserve the reliability of its system. However, the site has not disclosed the method yet.

“Although we accept and consider all votes received by users, not all votes have the same impact (or ‘weight’) on the final rating. When unusual voting activity is detected, an alternate weighting calculation may be applied in order to preserve the reliability of our system.”

As of now, Bailey’s The Little Mermaid has 7/10 on IMDB, despite 12 thousand one-star ratings out of 28 thousand total reviewers.
