Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 makes huge money

It is no surprise that Call of Duty sells a lot, but Modern Warfare 2 is going very fast. Last week it turned out that the game had achieved a record yield very quickly. Now the next milestone has already been reached.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 took just 3 days to raise $800 million, making it the fastest-grossing Call of Duty ever. Activision Blizzard’s quarterly review now shows that even more impressive numbers have been achieved. Modern Warfare 2 has made $1 billion in just ten days.

Previously, Black Ops 2 held a record for the fastest-grossing Call of Duty for $1 billion. That game reached the milestone in 2012 in just 15 days. Modern Warfare 2 is only a more expensive game and itself has an edition that should cost around a hundred euros, so perhaps the newer title has an advantage there.

That a big game like Call of Duty eventually yields a billion is not unusual in itself. But it is striking that Modern Warfare 2 has reached that amount while players can’t even spend on microtransactions yet. Season 1 of the game’s live service content will not begin until November 16.

Lots of support for Modern Warfare 2?

Incidentally, it seems that Modern Warfare 2 may remain the cash cow of Activision Blizzard longer than previous Call of Duty games. Reportedly, there will be no new Call of Duty in 2023, but DLC for Modern Warfare 2. Activision is even more vague about that and is still talking about a full-fledged Call of Duty in 2023.
