Following a successful debut in 2022, the Mill Valley Music Festival is scheduled to return to the Bay Area in 2023 for its second edition, with bigger names and a longer runtime. Cake, as well as Michael Franti & Spearhead, will headline the event set for May 13-14 at Friends Field, next to the Mill Valley Community Center, in Mill Valley, California.

After selling out as a one-day event last year with folk artist Ben Harper headlining, the festival has expanded to a weekend-long format, with more musical acts, local artists and food vendors.

A rapper and singer-songwriter, Michael Franti is a regular on the Bay Area music festival circuit. The Oakland native played a set at BottleRock in Napa last year and is scheduled to appear in late May at the California Roots Music and Arts Festival in Monterey.

Michael Franti, of Michael Franti & Spearhead, performs on the third day of BottleRock Napa on May 29, 2022, in Napa, Calif.

The members of alternative rock band Cake are also Northern California locals, hailing from Sacramento. Cake is best known for its deadpan style, exemplified in 1996’s “The Distance” and its cover of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.”

Other notable names set to perform include Tank and the Bangas, Jerry Harrison & Adrian Belew performing Talking Heads’ “Remain in Light,” The Alive, Durand Jones, The Dip, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears, Valerie June, and Orchestra Gold.

In a press release announcing the event, festival organizers also promised to provide “a curated assortment of Marin County’s best artisans, food vendors, and philanthropic organizations, plus family-friendly activities, immersive art installations, local craft beer, and so much more.”

Tickets (which start at $219 for two-day general admission passes) are available here.
