Tom Holland Updates Spider-Man 4 Progress: ‘It’s Looking Pretty Good’

Written by on June 12, 2023

Tom Holland is cautiously optimistic regarding the development of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s fourth solo Spider-Man film.

During a recent interview with Inverse, Holland commented that there is “some stuff going on” with the untitled Spider-Man 4, and that he is “excited about” it. “Whether or not it’ll come to fruition, who knows?” the actor added. “But right now it’s looking pretty good, and we’ll just have to wait and see.” This update comes shortly after Holland confirmed that there had been meetings regarding Spider-Man 4, but that they were put on pause in solidarity with the striking WGA writers. “There’s been multiple conversations had, but at this point it’s very, very early stages,” he said at the time.

The Development of the MCU’s Spider-Man 4

Spider-Man: No Way Home, the MCU’s third and most recent solo Spidey adventure, opened in theaters in December 2021. That same month, producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal confirmed that Sony and Marvel Studios were beginning to “actively” develop Spider-Man’s future within the MCU. Then, in May 2022, Sony chairman Tom Rothman stated that the company was “[hoping] to get working” on Spider-Man 4, ideally with director Jon Watts and stars Holland and Zendaya returning.

In October, unconfirmed reports surfaced, claiming that Spider-Man 4 was targeting a July 2024 release date. One month later, it was reported that Holland had inked a new deal to reprise his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the MCU. Shortly thereafter, it was reported that the fourth Spider-Man film was shifting into “advanced” pre-production. This past February, the aforementioned Feige confirmed that the writing process for Spider-Man 4 had begun, though he declined to say more. “All I will say is that we have the story,” Feige said. “We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now.” (Of course, this was before the WGA strike, which began in May.)

Will Miles Morales Join the MCU?

Elsewhere in the Inverse interview, Holland — who has played original Spider-Man Peter Parker in the MCU since 2016’s Captain America: Civil War — stated that he would love to help facilitate Miles Morales’ franchise debut. “I would be honored to bring Miles Morales into the live action world,” Holland said. “How we do that, I don’t know, but given the opportunity, I would jump at it.”

While the Miles Morales incarnation of Spider-Man has yet to make his live-action debut, the character has already taken the world of animation by storm. Miles serves as the lead character of Sony’s 2018 Oscar-winning animated feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, in which he is mentored by an older, jaded Peter Parker. Miles recently made his comeback in the newly-released sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Notably, the aforementioned Pascal recently confirmed that a live-action Miles Morales movie is in the works, though it’s currently unclear if it would be part of the MCU or Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

That said, the MCU has been teasing Miles’ introduction since 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, Holland’s first solo film as Peter Parker. The film features Donald Glover as Miles’ uncle, Aaron Davis/Prowler. Aaron even directly references Miles, mentioning that he has “a nephew who lives around here.” The aforementioned No Way Home also heralds Miles’ MCU arrival, with Jamie Foxx’s Max Dillon/Electro commenting, “There’s gotta be a Black Spider-Man somewhere out there.”
