We Know The Force’s Origin, Star Wars’ New Movie Can Finally Show It

James Mangold’s Star Wars movie will center on the very first Jedi, meaning the story can also show the Force’s origin. Star Wars has explored the Force’s origin before, both mystical and biological, but no story has depicted it in detail. Now that Dawn of the Jedi is taking the franchise farther back in time than any canon source so far, there is a perfect opportunity for the new Star Wars movie to show the Force’s origin. This would tie in nicely with the beginning of the Jedi Order, explore the Force’s nature on a deeper level, and weave together several story threads throughout the Star Wars timeline.
Even though Mangold and his team will bring their own ideas to Star Wars, showing the Force’s origin would also honor George Lucas’ original plans. In his version of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Lucas would have explained the Whills and midi-chlorians by revealing more about the microbiotic world of the Force. These plans never came to fruition, but Lucas’ concept of the Whills is similar to other aspects of the Force that have already been introduced in canon. Mangold’s Star Wars movie can build off these ideas to finally show the Force’s origin and how it led to the Dawn of the Jedi.
The Origin Of The Force In Star Wars Canon
The Force’s origin was first explored in Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 6 when Jedi Master Yoda traveled to a mysterious Force planet. This nexus was the birthplace of the midi-chlorians, microscopic lifeforms found in all living cells that allowed the Force to communicate its will to sentient beings. Life could not exist without the midi-chlorians, and the Force planet held the secrets of immortality, leading some to believe that it was where the Force came from. However, the spirit of Qui-Gon Jinn told Yoda that it was “one of the origins of all life in the galaxy” and The Clone Wars introduced an even more significant Force planet.
The Force Wielders And Mortis In Star Wars Canon
Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Ahsoka Tano found themselves transported to the ethereal realm of Mortis in The Clone Wars season 3. They encountered three powerful beings called the Father, the Daughter, and the Son, Force Wielders that represented the Balance, the Light, and the Dark respectively. Mortis was also speculated as the Force’s origin point, and the Force Wielders were remembered through Legend as the “Force gods of Mortis.” The Force’s origin has been set up perfectly thanks to The Clone Wars, but now Mangold’s Star Wars movie can lead into the first Jedi as well.
Bridging The Gap Between The Force’s Origin & The Dawn Of The Jedi
The Force Wielders would serve as a perfect bridge between the Force’s origin and the Dawn of the Jedi in Mangold’s Star Wars movie. Mortis is tied to the Force’s origin, and the Force Wielders were powerful enough to influence it on a grand scale, making them a crucial part of the timeline. Star Wars: The Last Jedi hinted that the first Jedi on Ahch-To focused more on balance between the light and dark sides of the Force, a practice that may have come from the Force users directly. As mortal beings began to touch the Force, the “Force gods” may have shown them how to wield it properly.
Additional elements from the Star Wars Legends continuity suggest that the Force Wielders may have helped create the Jedi Order. The Force Wielders were known as Celestials in Legends, powerful architects who designed massive space stations and even moved planets to create new star systems. It’s possible that they created the Tho Yor, pyramid-shaped ships that collected Force users from across the galaxy to form the Je’Daii Order on Tython. The Je’Daii in Legends also believed in a strict balance between the light and the dark, so this history would translate well to the official Star Wars canon.
Showing The Force’s Origin Would Resolve Unexplored Mysteries
Filling in this time period is only one mystery that would be solved if Mangold’s Star Wars movie showed the Force origin. The Jedi were transported to Mortis after encountering a pyramid-shaped monolith, and Mangold’s Star Wars move could confirm if these are indeed based on the Tho Yor. The mural of the Force Wielders and the World Between Worlds also demands further exploration, especially if they relate to the Force’s origin. Star Wars has revealed the basics of the Force’s origin, but there’s so much more to be explored, and Mangold’s movie can start by finally showing it.
