Andor Showrunner Refused to Change the Star Wars Series Due to Toxic Fans

Showrunner Tony Gilroy didn’t let toxic Star Wars fans change his plans for Andor.


Per Deadline, Gilroy discussed how he interacted with the Star Wars community in the midst of working on Rogue: One A Star Wars Story and its spinoff series Andor. “It was shocking on [Rogue One] because I didn’t really have any exposure when Rogue happened and everything that happened,” he explained. “I was really blown back by what was going on and this that I hadn’t paid attention to. So I knew about it when I came back, I knew what to expect.” Gilroy additionally spoke regarding the most passionate Star Wars fans, with the showrunner emphasizing that the community’s love of the franchise deserved the utmost respect.

Gilroy also admitted fans were not always happy whenever creators introduced new chapters to the Star Wars canon. He spoke on the difficulties Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy faced when addressing some of the more toxic members of the community, with the showrunner sympathizing with Kennedy’s dilemma. “Yeah, you gotta have pretty thick skin to do that,” Gilroy said. “But I pay attention. I don’t think we made any real adjustments because of it, but it’s been interesting to watch.”


Andor Season 2

Actor Diego Luna, who portrays the titular Cassian Andor, revealed he and Gilroy did consider some of the feedback the show received from supportive fans when making the series’ upcoming Season 2. Luna discussed how the advent of social media was a massive help to the show’s creators, with the actor explaining how it was now easier to pinpoint the elements of a show that resonated with audiences. “It’s kind of cool to have an opportunity to go and execute another season having this information,” Luna said. “Somehow, the audience is part of this season because the interaction we had served as inspiration.”

However, Gilroy previously claimed he ceased all producing services for Star Wars in support of the Writers Guild of America’s (WGA) ongoing strike, meaning Andor Season 2 might premiere later than fans expected. The showrunner stated he discontinued all “writing and writing-related work” for the series a day prior to May 2, which was when the strike began. WGA negotiating committee co-chair Chris Keyser further confirmed Gilroy shared his intent to support the strike after a meeting with his fellow showrunners. At the time of writing, it remains unclear when Gilroy will return to the production of Andor Season 2.
